SOURCE: exturnal hard drive fell
The fall was probably too much for it. If it was powered up at the time of the fall and the fall caused a substantial shock, it is most likely gone. A running hard drive cannot take much shock.
Before giving up on it, if it was mine, I would remove the hard drive from the portable case and plug it directly into a computer either through a USB adapter, directly to a motherboard or any other available method you may have.
The purpose of that is to bypass the case's electronics and deal directly with the actual hard drive.
If it wont read from it by doing that, you are done.
You could try a warranty claim if it's new enough.
If your data is extremely important, you can send it to a data recovery service but the costs are high. $500 or $1,000 for data recovery isnt that unusual.
