When my Pearl stopped working, I was able to reflash the firmware even though the computer couldn't recognize it when I plugged it in. I would run this from a PC not a MAC if possible, as I haven't tried it on a MAC.

Get the pc software here:
http://voxrightnow.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2243/related/1

Follow all the instructions that popup when you run the software and you should be fine.

My computer does't recognize the mp3's file anymore

Try using a can of air and blowing into the plug in on the player. If that doesn't work then take it to the store and see if they can help.

After pressing the "MENU" button to turn on my RCA Th1602-A the "PEARL" text and logo appear for about five seconds and then it returns to being. The battery is good. It operated perfectly during the...

The other day I replaced my battery and my unit would not go any further than the Pearl logo. So I downloaded the firmware upgrade from http://voxrightnow.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2243/related/1, and followed all the troubleshooting instructions that popup when you start the program:

start the program,
remove the battery,
hold the play button while plugging into usb,
release the play button when the the term "initializing" replaces "searching",
click the start button to replace the firmware.

You might want to leave the "format data" box unchecked to see it that works. I couldn't play aac files without formatting, but you may not have to format to fix your problem.

After I did this, my pearl started normally, and my computer recognized it again.

I lost everything in my root directory!

The upgrade should have put any pretinent files on the device that were needed. The easyRip application will write the necessary files when the transfer of media is done.

In answer to your question specifically...No, the player is not having issues because you don't have the root directory files. I would try re-installing the firmware again.

This solution may work even if you cannot your pearl to start up or the computer to recognize it.

PC won't recognize

Either 1) the USB port on the laptop is not a USB 2.0 port, and therefore is too weak to power the mp3 player

or

2) The hold/lock switch is engaged

or

3) you plugged it in without installing the installation software

My PC does not recognize my Sansa c240

I just purchased this model for my boyfriend, had a hell of a time trying to figure it out, but after doing numerous google searches, I figured out that you have to place the lock/unlock or "hold" on some models into the lock position, then hold down the rewind button DON'T LET GO UNTIL THE PC RECOGNIZES IT!! It should work. I downloaded all the firmware and stuff I could (not even sure what firmware is... lol... just did it cuz that's what I read to do). Once I did this, it picked it up within 60 secnods and now my PC recognizes it everytime I plug it in. I was up unitl 1am this morning trying to get the darn thing to be recognized... I hope this saves you some sleep! LOL
