Its a common problem and its easy to do but I suggest go to a repair place. They can do it in 1 minute and charge u minimum or nothing. I would not leave the camera there

Sony camcorders C:31:23 error
Take the battery out and turn selection switch to camera and then turn it off. Put the battery back in and its working again.
if that doesn't work try
Try smacking the side of the camera relatively hard with the palm of your hand. Eject the tape and reinsert. You may need to do this a couple of times.
good luck

SOURCE: HDR-HC1 Sony camcorder- reinsert the cassette error message

Bill,

The problem is with the S-reel. Take the tape out, remove the battery, and give it a slight bump. This usually fixes the issue for a couple of weeks. I haven't heard of any permenant fixes. I took my cam into circuit city (before they closed) twice for the same issue. Very frustrating when you don't know what the issue is.

SOURCE: Sony Handycam Video Hi8 - TRV138- cassette - will not play -please reinsert

Hello Everyone!

My Handy Cam CCD TRV-138 was have a malfunction error by stopping and beeping and telling me to reinsert cassette.
HERE IS HOW YOU GET IT TO WORK.....
Let me first tell you that you need to call the Sony Service Hotline at 1-800-488-7669.

They will have their service tech help you to reset the camera, STEP by STEP and it will work fine after that.

You have to do several things in the right sequence in order for the reset to work. You can't just press the reset button and make it reset.

It doesn't cost anything to have Sony help you over the phone. They are all too happy to make sure that you are satisfied with their product and want to help you.

Mine was out of Warranty by 4 years and they still helped me without charging me.

I followed their steps and it worked. She had me first remove the cassette tape from the camera, turn off camera, remove the battery, then she had me turn the camera back on, then she had me take a pen or pencil and push the reset button, that is below the volume buttons (inside the view finder area). Release the pen then turn camera off again, then unplug the cord and wait 60 seconds so that the residule electric current can completely drain from the Camcorder. After 60 seconds, power on the camera and before you do anything else *YOU MUST RE-ENTER AND SET THE YEAR, DATE, TIME before you go any further. This is crucial to your camera working properly. Then power off again. Power up one more time and this time try to record and playback and see if everything works ok.

Mine worked fine. If this does not work for you it may be because you own a different model and you will need to have Sony give you specific instructions for your model.

Good Luck and let me know on this blog if it works.

SOURCE: loading tapes

I have the same problem. If I remove the battery for a few seconds, then replace the battery and wait about 5 seconds, the tape compartment closes.

SOURCE: loading tapes

Sony HDR models that the carriage won't close is caused by the mode switch on the chassis. The mode switch controls the cameras function for loading and loading of the cassette. Basically tells the electronics what is happening. This becomes dirty and causes the chassis not to complete it's cycle on eject. Thus staying open. It has no idea where the mechanism is at this time. It can be cleaned and realigned but the chassis needs to be removed to get at it. Definitely a service depot repair. Sorry!

For the VHS tape that is stuck inside of the VCR.You should call a person that repairs and fixes VCR's to have a look and see what the issues is and why the cassette drawer is unable to open up.

Handy cam hi8 dcr

Try removing the battery and charging it. Then put the battery back on the camera. This will reset the cassette system. The cassette should open or close depending upon what status it is in. Once you get the camera to eject fully, clean your heads with a dry head cleaner cassette for Hi8 video. If your camera is still eating tape, could be a broken pin or damaged heads.

My sony hi8 Handycam TRV 138 gives me a message reinsert tape What is wrong? do it need repair

The cassette is not being detected when the tray is landing. If the head is not spinning but you are getting the cassette ejected then it is a malfunction of the loading mechanism. Even if the tape end detection optocouplers are defective the fault could be so.If you can check this out then try and test the voltage before and after the cassette loads. there should be a change if not replace. check on the loading mechanism too. Hope this helps. Good day

Unit accepted cassette, won't eject

It is likely that either the drive belt has broken or is slipping. Because the unit is still in "play" mode, the mechanism won't let the door open up. If you have not opened up these units before, do not attempt it now. This unit should be taken to an experienced tech for repair. Where are you located?

Hi8 won't eject cassette

There is a broken plastic part inside the cassette and needs to be replaced. Mostly due to cassette tape improper position and camera jam (tape jam).

Sony handycam video cassette

To the best of my knowledge 8mm VTR's have not been available for some time now. On the other hand there are plenty of Hi8 cameras and players available after market. eBay is a great source. Keep in mind that Hi8 cameras and decks will also play standard 8mm video tapes.
There are also many video tape transfer services that will transfer your 8mm tapes to DVD or other formats of your choice. Just Google "videotape transfer service"

Can not eject tape

I had same problem, while transferring media from TRV-16 to DVD, tape would not play, then would not eject. This after transferring several tapes to DVD. I tried several things over the last couple months that did not work before finally getting it open today. It did me no good to remove several of the outer panels that were each held by two "tiny" phillips head screws each. Went to the internet, found your post, also found a post that referred me back to SONY page which follows.......

Follow this procedure to troubleshoot if the cassette compartment will not open or the tape is stuck and will not eject.
IMPORTANT: If your camcorder model has a RESET button, first try pressing this button. If there is no RESET button, or pressing the button does not resolve the issue, continue with the troubleshooting steps below.
  1. Turn off the camcorder.
  2. Remove the battery from the camera.
  3. Remove the AC power supply from the camera.
  4. Slide the power switch on the camera to the VTR , VCR or CAMERA mode for 15 seconds.
  5. Slide the power switch back to the OFF position.
  6. Connect the AC power supply to the camera.
  7. Attempt to open the cassette compartment.
"NOTE: If the issue is still unresolved after completing all of the troubleshooting steps, service may be required."

After I did this, I could hear a whirring sound when I hit eject, although nothing came out. While the whirring was going on, I pulled up and out with constant pressure and the cassette holder opened. The tape had jammed apparently as the little protective plastic tape guard was jammed partially open when I pulled the cassette out. Good Luck and don't be afraid to put a little pressure on the door if you can hear the door trying to open.

Now I turn to recovering the tape, but having grown up with cassette decks, don't believe it will be a problem.
