Seagate SATA 160 GB (ST3160827AS) fried!

A couple days ago I installed a new 500 GB HD in my PC. The power cable wasn't too good and it made a short-circuit in the 160GB HD, with smoke included. It only fried the contacts and one diode, making the board un-usable. I bought a new identic and functional HD and replaced the boards. The disk works perfectly (spins without any noise) but BIOS doesn't recognize it (takes some time searching) and when WinXP loading screen appears, my PC hangs up. Any help, please? :)

They have the same firmware, but I guess that's not enough... The chipset are from different manufactures, but the board seems to be equal to the old one (same circuit design and pieces).

Anyway, where can I check those numbers?

It's too difficult to find the EXACT board, and too expensive...!

St3160827as seagate hdd is not detecting in bios , other new seagate hdd is working fine with the same connection(sata cable and power card) I have imp data in that hdd ,pls help me how to get data...

Turn your computer off.
Disconnect the power cord.
Disconnect all other disk-drives and CD/DVD drives, leaving only the "suspect" drive connected.
Restart your computer, and enter BIOS SETUP, and see if the drive is detected, and how it is connected (primary/secondary, master/slave).

Read the model-number and serial-number and manufacture-date on the disk's label,
and access Seagate's web-site, to check the warranty-status of the drive.
If the warranty is valid, Seagate will replace the drive, at minimal cost to you.

Search online for a professional "data recovery service". For a significant fee, they can repair your disk-drive, just long-enough to copy your files to a new disk-drive.

Problem with 160GB HDD

Hi there! I think it's not possible to replace the diode as these components are machine soldered to the board. If a machine soldering facility is available to you, you could possibly replace the diode (choose the same diode model adjacent to the one which is damaged. All the best to u.
