I was playing a game on Playstation 3 and it just shut down. The red light is on to show that it has power, but when i try and turn it on i get a green light for a second and then a white one and then it goes red again. At which point the PS3 shuts itself down once more. I have heard of the "red ring of death" for Xbox 360 but does sony's PS3 have the same problem?

Does it blink red or yellow lights? That's a sign of hardware failure and the system needs to be serviced.

Hmmmnnn, consider the reason they pulled the rev compatible system off the market. It is possible to be getting the symptoms of YLOD without it actually happening with some games. The older games spun faster(sometimes) and made the system work harder. It could be heating up and shutting down right at the point of failure. I've seen 2 different revers compatible systems YLOD the same way. Good luck.

If your PS3 console attempts to turn on, then beeps and a yellow light comes on and then your Sony PlayStation 3 shuts down or does not power on at all or shows no video means YLOD or Yellow Light Of death has occurred! A guy had same problem with His console 6 months back, He was able to fix it for 15 bucks ! without sending it to Sony for costly repair.

This is known as the yellow light of death.Similar to xbox 360 ring of death,this is normally caused from overheating from the console.If it is still under warranty contact playstation and send it back to them other wise it's about $150.00 usd to have it repaired. Here's the number

hi..Seems like your Power Supply went dead or either a faulty button.. Since those are touch pads those sometimes wear out. Another issue could be due to overheating..

• Allow at least 4 inches of clearance on all sides for the PLAYSTATION 3.
• Remove the PLAYSTATION 3 from any cabinets so it is out in the open.
• Shut the PLAYSTATION 3 down completely and let it cool down to room temperature, then try running it again.
• If the fan cannot be heard before the system shut down, the PLAYSTATION 3 may need to be sent in for service.
• If there is no airflow from any of the vents, the system may need to be sent in for service

Hmm. I'm not quite sure exactly what the problem is, but if your playstation doesn't turn at all when you flip the back switch it means your harddrive is probably fried.
