Loss of drive in a Craftsman Lawn tractor

I own a Craftsman Lawn tractor with automatic transmission; 3 years old. I changed the oil, filters and spark plugs a month ago (Feb. 2009). Engine started up fine and I was able to drive the lawn tractor into the storage shed; less that 20 feet of driving. A month later, I started the lawn tractor and shift to reverse but the tractor would not move; shifting in forward produced no movement as well. I check to make sure the freewheel control was in the ''engaged'' position which it was.

I need to know what additional troubleshooting steps I should take.

I also have a Craftsman tractor with the same problem. Sears repairman said it needed a new transmission and it would cost $1,400 to install. A new one is about $1,000. Anyway, if you remove the battery and the battery tray under the seat it will expose the transmission fill hole (hex). I opened the top and it looked empty. I had a bottle of 90 weight gear oil in my shop and filled the transmission to the top. I have not had any problems with it since. $4.00 bottle of oil verses a new tractor is worth a try.

New tractor power loss on a grade, deos not develop full speed

Hello Joe

If you have an automatic or hydrostatic transmission then you have a lemon, which means once the oil heats up in your transmission it thins out and clutchs and swash plate have no grip on the drive system which is hydraulic pressure needed to hold on the shaft and axles this happens all inside the transmission you cant see it but you can tell when going up slight hills and when you have the blades engaged it crawls like a turtle get you warranty out Joe..... dont touch anything that may void your warranty..... just call service department they will send service man out to your home even after that keep a good eye on your tractor since its still under waranty for further problems.

Joe your 20 year old craftsman had a better built ****** by sears and you probably had a 6 speed or five speed even hydostatics were good too, they dont have much problems except belt slipping its an easy fix this new tractor u need service man right away.

My craftsman lawn tractor seemed to overheat and struggle with hesitation. I replaced the spark plugs, cleaned the filter and added oil, however, it still seeems a little sluggish with hesitation. Do you...

Check the oil, if it is a milky color then it has water in it and will cause it to over heat. Also smell it for gas that will also cause it to over heat. Has any other work been done recently?

Changing the oil filter on a lawn tractor

If it is a screw on type oil filter, apply a film of oil on seal, then screw on. If you want to, go ahead and pour some oil in the filter, in my opinion the oil will circulate faster if there is some oil already in the filter.

Looking for when the oil and transmission should be changed on Lt

Hey,

Many manufactures recommend a engine oil change every 50hrs more often in extreme conditions,

Most transmissions are sealed units if this is the case company's recommend not to touch these,

If you have a hydrostatic drive or a Zero turn unit with twin hydrostatic drives the transmission oil must be changed every 500 hours or every year whichever comes first as the hydraulic oil brakes down in time, also at these intervals the hydro oil filter must also be changed...

10 year old Craftsman Lawn Tractor won't start

That's really strange. The low-speed fuel adjustment screw may be set way too rich, but that doesn't seem likely. With the air filter off, look at the choke plate if possible as you advance the throttle and see at what point the choke closes. Back it off till the choke opens and then put the filter back on and try to start it at that setting. Another thing that could cause too much fuel is if the adjustment of the carburetor float is off, causing the fuel level to be too high in the carb bowl.

Try changing the its oil-seals. The problem lies there. It may be damaged or the oil-seals are now smaller than its is used to and it is because of the heat. The oil-seal are rounded things that are made of rubber.
