Have just bought craftsman mower gas spraying out exhast

Does it have spark? Does the engine get fuel? If you spray starting fluid into the air filter will it start up?

sounds like the float in the carburetor is not functioning correctly.
After the mower was turned off did gas start to drip out by the carburetor?

Take it back to Sears and let them repair it under warrenty

If it has the Briggs or Kohler engine, it has a built in compression release. If the release isn't working properly, it will be hard to start. It mimics a weak battery. One remedy to enable the compression release to work properly is to adjust the valves. They need to be adjusted periodically. Briggs has all the valve clearances for all their engines in an easy-to-use chart. I will give you valve service instructions and then the engine chart with all the valve clearances.

i have a brand new craftsman briggs &stratton silver engine series 5.50 158cc it will start but will not run unless i keep pushing the prime button to give it gas once i stop so does the engine

it's still getting bad gas. take off air filter, prime with fresh gas, use an old spray can, and keep spraying while running until all old gas is used up in the carb

it sounds like the fuel pump on engine is going bad check fuel filter & if it doesn't work then possibly the fuel pump

Drain the gas out of the tank. Take carb off and clean carb. Most likely needle and seat are gummed out from gas in it.

Unfortunately, there is no single manual for this. It depends entirely on what crankshaft the OEM requested be used in the engine. You need to find out the diameter of the crankshaft and any threading to it, direction of the threading, etc. From there, a replacement can usually be found pretty easily. That or contact Briggs customer support (number in your owners manual) with the Model, Type and Code numbers off the engine. From this information they can see how the engine was outfitted for that OEM. Horsepower tells them nothing as those ratings and stickers are often replaced by the OEM and often NOT the information Briggs sends out on the engine.
