You should be able to chain together. Only change IP scope on second unit to avoid any IP conflicts.

I had the same problem with the Ipod of my son.
To solve the problem, just upgrade your Firmware to the latest version. This will allow u to define the new MAC address. But the problem is that this firmware version doesn't work well, reseting the router every couple of hours. So to solve this problem, after you upgraded the FW and defined the MAC address, downgrade the firmware to you previous version, the new mac address will still there.
This workaround you need to do every time that you want to define any new MAC address

Have you attempted a hard reset? There is a small button on the rear or bottom of unit. Depress that for 10 or so seconds and the unit will perform a factory reset. Try that to determine if it will remember the recent downloaded firmware.

I have a 3 COM router model WL-542 how do i set up a password that others cannot access

1. Download the updated software from the vendor's web-site.
2. Connect your computer with an Ethernet cable, *NOT* via wireless, to the router.
3. Access the router's built-in web-server interface.
4. Navigate through the web-pages to the "update firmware" page.
5. Click "browse", and point to the file on your computer that is the updated software.
6. Click "update".
7. Hopefully, BC Hydro wil NOT cut your AC power while your router is updating.
8. The router will restart.
9. Done.

There are actually 3 models of the WL-542. Go to this page and select "All downloads" in the section matching your model. You will find the exact model number on a sticker on the side or under your WL-542.
