For Calculating percatnge and then adding it to the principal you ought sequence the keys for your above example, in the following manner:

Key in 200 : Display shows 200
Press X : Display shows 200 *
Key in 20 : Display shows 20
Press % : Display shows 40
Press + : Display shows 240

Similarly for the later part of example,

Key in 200 : Display shows 200
Press X : Display shows 200 *
Key in 20 : Display shows 20
Press % : Display shows 40
Press - : Display shows 160

So, first multiply, with the value of %, then instruct the calcy that the value was a % value & then deduct or add to the principal as desired.

  • satyapogula Apr 22, 2011

You have to press '=' key to get the displayof 240 160 as in parampal's steps in MJ120T.

Look for a key with "RATE SET" printed above it and press and HOLD that for about 3sec then type in the tax rate using number keys. Then press RATE SET key again.

In answer to original question. I get your answer on my MJ-120T if I type 2 0 0 MU 2 0 % in other words what price do I sell at in order to have 20% mark up when buying for 200. Answer 250 as the mark up is on the final price (20% of 250 is 50 so correct).
To simply add 20% to a value key the following>>
2 0 0 + 2 0 % to display 240.
Or like this to see the intermediate percentage calculation>>
2 0 0 x 2 0 % to display 40 and then + = to display 240.

Or on the MJ-120 you can set your TAX rate to 20 and just use the TAX+ and TAX- keys this model has these dedicated keys.

How do I calculate the precentage

Percent simply means "out of 100", so one half (ie 0.5) needs to be multiplied by 100 to give 50% (for example).

Your calculator may have a percentage function (usually on the equals sign but you will need to refer to the instructions to check how it works.
