Margaret, you plug your charger into the battery, the lead or connection for charger is attached to battery and that is where battery is located. Check the attached links,instruction and guides, Good luck Battery is # 74 in link picture.

Is battery powered, did you try calling sears tech center for further info ?
i have found them to be very helpfull with mower problems.

I have had this model 917.374541 for only 2 years. The clutch does not engage the self propel any longer. The Owner's manual does not have a solution. Anyone know how I can fix this myself?

If how you described you unit is true you do not have an electric mower you have a gas powered mower, you DO NOT have a battery!!!??? Place the throttle lever to choke position and prime carb with primer bulb 3-5 times then pull cord. Wala!!!! It's running rite. That guy at Loews must have been smokin somthin. Good Luck...

More than likely the problem is with the drive wheels at the front. The cogs are most likely worn away - happened to me about 2 or 3 years ago and have the same problem again. Poorly made - cogs are plastic. You'd expect the cogs to be made of metal. Cannot order them from the States as Sears don't ship across the Atlantic. Have to try and get them in the UK.
