PC won't run: Fan Error

When I try to turn on my old IBM ThinkPad sometimes I just get a text error in the upper left hand corner of the screen:
Fan Error.

What should I do?

  • mark_lubeck Mar 05, 2009

The fan does seem to go on. I hear it running.

Right now the machine is working, vista is running and the fan is quietly working. I'll have to listen for the fan when I get this error.

First blow compressed air through the vents to clean out the dust. If that does not help open the laptop and remove fan. I have a Thinkpad Z60m that had fan error. Removed the fan and then pulled just the plastic blade unit out by gently turning back and forth and pulling it away from the body simultaneously. Cleaned the shaft and then the sleeve which the shaft goes into with a toothpick. Dropped 1 drop sewing machine oil into sleeve and put back the blade unit. Works great. If all else fails, order a new fan for your laptop.

This is a self test that is checking the fan and finding that it is in error. You might have the fan damaged or else just stuck with dust inside and therefore to protect from over heating the laptop gives you this error.

Please check if the fan actually works when you switch on.

Yes check the fan when the error appears so you can find out if it is a hardware issue or a software issue.

Thinkpad X41 starting two short beeps, fan error and shuts of

The IBM POST code states that after the 2 beeps the screen displays the error.
In the case you have a faulty fan and it needs to be replaced.

Fan Error message but the fan's working on another machine

One option would be to replace the motherboard. You can use one from T40 -T43 with your monitor. I bought one on Ebay for $90 which came with the board installed to the bottom plastic tray. I only had to install my monitor, memory, keyboard, hard drive, & plastic bezel and I had a good working unit for $90.

IBM thinkpad t42 boot up problem.

The most common reason is memory.

First, try to reseat (remove and reinsert).

If still a problem, test one module at a time.

Hope this helps.

My IBM ThinkPad showing a black screen with a small computer symbol in the upper left hand corner with a lock symbol next to it ??? computer unreactive.

That usually means there is a system password that needs to be entered. If you do not know it, you must remove the CMOS battery from the laptop and reset it.

T40 2373 ibm fan error

One of three things; 1- when the fan codes on some IBM's, the code locks in the bios, there is a download the has to be ran in order to clear the code and the machine to run properly. Check IBM's support site to see if this is the case for your machine 2- If the machine overheated in the process of the fan going out, then the processor may have been damaged, causing the problem and 3- if there was a malfunction with the motherboard which initially caused the fan to stop working, a new fan won't work either. Test the old fan by hooking power up to it, it is power direct and has two leads positive and negative, when power is applied it will run or not. If it does run then the problem is with the motherboard. Try these and get back to me.

ERROR 0271

Are you a computer whizz? (do you know a lot about computers like me?)

Could be the Cpu fan (Central Processing Unit)
That could be lethal to the laptop.
Just as well it's a IBM other wise . . .
As for the error it means the time and date are not set.
soloution: run the bios setup utillity to reset time and date.
