When I try to turn on my old IBM ThinkPad sometimes I just get a text error in the upper left hand corner of the screen:
Fan Error.
What should I do?
First blow compressed air through the vents to clean out the dust. If that does not help open the laptop and remove fan. I have a Thinkpad Z60m that had fan error. Removed the fan and then pulled just the plastic blade unit out by gently turning back and forth and pulling it away from the body simultaneously. Cleaned the shaft and then the sleeve which the shaft goes into with a toothpick. Dropped 1 drop sewing machine oil into sleeve and put back the blade unit. Works great. If all else fails, order a new fan for your laptop.
This is a self test that is checking the fan and finding that it is in error. You might have the fan damaged or else just stuck with dust inside and therefore to protect from over heating the laptop gives you this error.
Please check if the fan actually works when you switch on.

The fan does seem to go on. I hear it running.
Right now the machine is working, vista is running and the fan is quietly working. I'll have to listen for the fan when I get this error.
