Start Menu Picture Disappeared Suddenly

Hi everyone, let me just say fixya really lives up to their name. You really do help solve problems.

Now, for the actual problem. I am running an IBM T-30 with Windows XP SP2 and the overall system is working fine, however the picture on the start menu suddenly disappeared. System Restore and restoring the registry does not work. I feel naked without my picture. Can any of you experts help with my problem. Thank you.

Sorry about that, yes...it is the picture next to my name on the start menu.

  • Bum Bam Feb 26, 2009

I don't know how to add it back from my user settings, can u give instructions

  • Bum Bam Feb 26, 2009

I didn't know that's but I tried that a while ago and that doesn't work. Additionally, there is no option to add picture, only to change. Even if I change the picture 100 times and restart, the picture still does not appear in Start Menu.

  • Bum Bam Feb 27, 2009

I know there are no pictures in windows classic theme or classic start menu. I am already using the xp theme but "regsvr32 shimgvw.dll" doesn't solve the problem. Any other solutions?

  • Bum Bam Feb 27, 2009

Thanks Spoem. That did it. Problem solved

  • Anonymous Apr 01, 2009

I have a IBM T60 and the picture is gone on my start menu. I can change in my settings but it never shows up on the start menu.

  • Barry Parks May 11, 2010

I need a clarification. What picture has gone missing? Is it the background image? Or the picture nect to your name on the Start Menu screen? Or is it something else? Please let me know.

Turn the Welcome screen on or off It sounds as if you accidentally turned off the welcome screen. Here's how to turn that function on and off:

To turn the Welcome screen on or off
You must have a computer administrator account on a computer that is a member of a workgroup or is a stand-alone computer to turn on or turn off the Use the Welcome screen feature. Logging on at the Welcome screen is not available on computers that are members of a network domain.

  1. Open Start Menu Picture Disappeared Suddenly - shortcutcold.gifUser Accounts in Control Panel.
  2. Click Change the way users log on or off.
  3. Do one of the following:
    • To specify that users log on to the computer using the Welcome screen, select the Use the Welcome screen check box. A user logs on to the computer by clicking his or her user account name on the Welcome screen. If a password is assigned to the account, the user is prompted to type it.
    • To specify that users log on to the computer without using the Welcome screen, clear the Use the Welcome screen check box. The Welcome screen will no longer appear when you start the computer. To log on to the computer, type your user name (and password, if you have one) in the standard Log On to Windows dialog box.
Start Menu Picture Disappeared Suddenly - note.gifc="/uploads/images/note.gif" alt="note.gif" class="h_mi" /> Notes
  • To open User Accounts, click Start, click Control Panel, and then click User Accounts.
  • Fast User Switching is available only when the Welcome screen is turned on. For more information, click Related Topics.
I hope this helps. Please let me know if you require further assistance.

    yes.
    go to control panel
    click on user accounts
    then add picture.

  • Anonymous Feb 26, 2009

If you are using Windows Classic Theme or the Classic Start Menu, there will be no user picture.
    so change to xp theme.

Note: If you have disabled Picture and Fax Viewer by using regsvr32 /u
shimgvw.dll, you will not be able to change the picture. To restore, go
    to Start/Run and type in: regsvr32 shimgvw.dll

Then go to User Account/Change my picture/Browse for more pictures/My
Pictures Folder/Choose the picture you want to use, then click Open.

    --

If it is a custom-made picture, make sure if it meets the following criteria:

    48x48/71 dpi, depth 24.

I right clicked on ONE of my friends profile picture to just hide that one and they all disappeared even MY profile picture. How do I get them all back???

I am not so sure what you've actually done, but let me give you a tip if you have made some changes with the privacy settings.
Login to your facebook account, click "Account" menu on the top-right corner, select "Privacy Settings" and then on the privacy settings page, click "Everyone" and then "Apply these Settings". Now return to the homepage or to your profile and check if any changes has taken place or not. I hope this will fix your problem, and you can still make the necessary changes with your privacy from the privacy settings.

In case you need my further assistance, don't hesitate to let me know.

Good luck.

Thanks for using FixYa.

My desktop icon for msn messenger has disappeared... how can I get it back?

The quickest, easiest way - go to the start menu --> all programs --> windows live - then right click on the live messenger program, then select "send to" then select "Desktop (create shortcut) and Viola! you should have a brand new shortcut for Windows Live Messenger on your desktop.

Hope this helped FixYa! If you found this helpful, please leave some feedback and a testimonial.

Hi lily - If your running Vista here's how :

4. Select Manage another account.

5. When the UAC box pops up, click Continue.

6. Select the user account that is to be deleted.

9. Click Delete Account.

If your Running Xp here's how:

Log on as you( by now I think everyone knows they should give themselves adminstrator priviledges)

Start>comtrol panel>user accounts>pick an account to change>delete account.

If this solves your problem PLEASE rate this as fixed. If you need more help just add a comment and I'll be happy to assist you further. Thanks.
