We just got a Via Venezia espresso maker. When I have the pod filter basket (with the pod) on top of the portafilter, it won't screw into the top. Can I just put the pod in the portafilter?

I don't think the handle is sold separately. Seattlecoffeegear does sells both a bottomless and an unpressurised portafilter for the Via Venezia. Both would be considered upgraded gear vs the pressurized one.
Hi
The handle rotates to the left until it stops, then pull down. If the baskets is left, turn the machine off and let it cool. then grab the basket and twist it sideways. If the basket stuck you may be missing a spring in the portafilter itself. It is in the top inside of the silver piece (wire spring).
No, these machines use a pressurized portafilter to make brewing espresso easier. Be sure your coffee is ground about the fineness of table salt. Just level the coffee in the filter and insert the filter as instructed.
