Most home
pregnancy tests give a final result within 2 minutes of coming into proper
contact with the urine flow.

SOURCE: How long after ovulation do you need to wait before taking a pregnancy test?

That really varies. Some people could get a result on a home pregnancy test within 10-14 days after ovulation but most people need to wait until the first day of a missed period.

Do pregnancy tests check for any abnormalities?

No, basic pregnancy tests simply check whether you are pregnant or not. They don't give any other information about the fetus. For this you need to do scans and more detailed testing through your doctor.

I took a home pregnancy test and was really disappointed to see that it was negative but then when I checked again after 20 minutes, I think I saw a very faint line appear in the result window. What does...

I'm sorry to say that if the result was negative after the allotted time, it will not have turned into a positive result 20 minutes later. What you are probably seeing is some kind of staining or blotch on the paper. If you are still unsure whether you are pregnant or not, best to wait 36 hours and repeat the test with a new one.

I got a positive result on a home pregnancy test and then got my period 2 days later. I am so confused, what does it mean? Am I pregnant or not?

having a
positive pregnancy test result and then getting your period is understandably
confusing. It could mean a few things:

1. The pregnancy test was faulty and
gave you a false positive result

2. You may have suffered a natural loss
in the early stages of pregnancy (actually not an uncommon thing to happen).

3. If you had a recent miscarriage,
termination or are taking HCG medications, it maybe that the HCG levels in your
urine were high and gave a false positive result.

The best solution is to go and see your doctor who can help
clarify exactly what your situation is.

What is a color changing tip on a pregnancy test? Is that where you get the result?

A color changing tip that comes with some of the more expensive home pregnancy tests is just an extra way of showing the user that the test is actually working. The actual result of the test appears in the result window - you have to read the specific instructions to be fully sure how a positive result will appear on that particular test.

Can I take a pregnancy test before I have even missed my period?

You can buy
pregnancy tests that are super sensitive and claim to detect pregnancy within 7
days of fertilization but you are more likely to get an accurate result if you
wait longer. Once you have missed your period, you can take a pregnancy test
and it will be easier to detect HCG levels in your urine if you are actually
pregnant.

How reliable are home pregnancy tests? I got a negative result but I keep thinking it might just have been a bad test.

Don't worry - if you got a negative result, the chances are that you are not pregnant. Home pregnancy tests are about 97%-98% reliable. But if you are still really worried, go and see your doctor.

Is it worth buying a home pregnancy test? How do they work?

Home pregnancy tests are actually quite reliable. They work by detecting
the hormone HCG which is found in both urine and blood. If you have a lab blood
test, it will probably detect pregnancy earlier than a home urine test.
