I have a Dell 1600n - the scanner light bulb does not come on. The carriage moves like it is scanning something - but the paper comes out blank. Is there a way to fix this? I do not want to junk the scanner.
1600n....prints ok, copies ok....won't scan. Goes thru the motion but bulb does not light and only shows that I scanned a blank page. I assume because the light does not come on it does not read the text.1600n....prints ok, copies ok....won't scan. The Dell 1600n requires that the Dell Network Scan Manager is running. Windows Vista and Windows 7 require user level authorization for this app to run properly and may be prompting you at start up. If you are telling it "no" when propmted then this is one thing that can be hanging you up. It is also possible the app is simply not running at all. Go to start>programs>Dell>Network Scan and see if it picks it up then. This app is how the dell printer itself gets the names to put in the list of available workstations to scan to.
1) Remove the label completely from the scanner module by gently pulling it. The scan
unlock switch automatically moves FORWARD to the unlock position.
2) NOTE: When you are moving the multi-function printer or do not intend to use it for a long period of time, move the switch BACKWARD to the lock position. To scan or copy a document, the switch must be unlocked.

sounds like your csanner is locked.up under where paper comes out look for a blue lever and pull towards you to unlock scanner.push in to lock scanner.check with printer off.
When you lift lid to scanner pad, does bulb light up? It should also move slightly as if to prepare for a scan. If these things do not occur, something is definitely wrong with the scanner itself and will require a technician to service.
If bulb does light and carriage moves, then you should try using the buttons on printer control panel and try to use software on computer to try a scan.
If the control panel button works, then it's a software issue. You can try different software like HP Directory or any photo software with input from scanner feature.
If software works, but control panel doesn't, you'll need a technician to fix the panel.
If neither work, we are back to a problem with the physical scanner. That requires a technician to look at it.
If the lock mechanism is broken as you say it might be, then it will have to be disassembled to be removed. Unplug it, there is high voltage present to run the scan lamp. Be very careful and deliberate while disassembling, you will have to put it back together, or get someone experienced to do it.
