There is no need to send the radio to some unsanctioned moonlighter.
I normally don't recommend clipping parts but for this radio there is not much else to do and it looks OK on an Oscilloscope too. Clip diode 205 to increase modulation. Then take a plastic flat tool and spread L 203 coils apart about a 1/8" each, nice and even and make sure they don't touch any metal.

You are not allowed to open it and make any mods without the proper licence however I think you are really asking how to make it operate at peak performance. Links attached will help:
should never tune.they are tuned from the factory. Now peak thats different. The only thing you can do is turn the watts up or down and turn the mod vr up. you need a meter to do this.A schematic will also help.now have at it.
clip D-9 diode for max mod. tune slugs L-8 and L-10 for max swing near back of radioL-8 has factory wax remove very careful tune slug out for max wattage output L8 L10 by rear of radio in heat sink look like tuning slugs 1 has factory wax on it remove to tune be very careful tuning slug is easy to break
first off if you don't have the proper equipment to do this you will have a cobra 150gtl dx used in the box that you can use for a chock block. turn the wrong can and you will never be able to get it back to working order.

nearly all problems are caused by poorly tuned or untuned antennas. a good antenna system with a cheap stock radio will out perform a great tuned radio with a bad antenna system any day of the week. if you dont believe me, check the firestik antenna website's tech notes. or wilson's tech notes.
