When any one is removed computer becomes off.
1.Ensure your dell 6400 battery is holding power. Some laptops will auto shut-off if the battery won't hold a charge. In that case, replace your battery and retry. Check your charging lights or indicators to see if your laptop is getting power and charging.
2.Check your AC to DC converter (the little black adapter you plug in your AC outlet.) This converts AC power into DC power. Is it abnormally hot? If so, it is probably burned out. Replace it. Note- high heat is not a true indicator of malfunctioning. It can be dead and cold as well. No power indicators on your laptop could be a sign of a dead or bad converter also. Converters WILL get hot (this is normal.) If it is REAL hot (to touch), then this is not good.
3.Check your power cord. Are there nicks or cuts? If so, unplugg it from the AC power and repair with electrical tape- better yet, replace it. Many computer salvage stores carry power adapter cords. They're cheap.
4. Check your laptop lid switch. If it is broken, you may have power but your screen may not come on. This is usually a little button or mechanism located close to the lid hinge that turns on or off your screen when your lid is open or closed respectively. Normally the operator does not push this button. These are fragile and broken easily on some laptop models. Sometimes these can be fixed, more often they will require replacements. If you aren't an expert repair person, get a technician to repair/replace it for you. Opening up laptops is a very delicate operation and much more difficult to repair than desktops. It may be worth it to spend the money for repair.
5. If you have tried these easy solutions and it still won't power on, then your problem lies elswhere. You may have an internal power switch or voltage regulator problem.. Internal problems will require professional help.
This is more of a remedy then an actual trouble shooting step but mostly works. You would probably hear this from a support agent if they are trying to get you off the phone because this problem make no sense.
Remove the battery and the power adapter from the computer. Then hold down the power button for at least one minute. Then connect every thing back up again and see what happens.

Remove the battery and the power adapter from the computer and leave it alone for about 24 hours. Then connect every thing back up again and see what happens.

By your description it sounds like your laptop is overheating. Many a laptop faces this issues because the Air Intake Duct is dirty, and the internal hardware.
When a processor in a computer becomes too hot, it shuts off. (More specifically BIOS turns it off) NO processor running, NO computer.
Since the opening for the Air Intake Duct, (Left front side), is on the side close to the bottom, it makes an excellent(?) location to 'inhale' foreign debris. Dust/Dirt/Hair/Food Crumbs/Lint, you name it.
When this foreign debris goes inside the Air Intake Duct it clogs it up, dramatically reducing the cooling efficiency of the cooling system.
The Air Intake Duct is connected directly to the System Fan, and this fan blows air through the Cooling Tube for the processor, and graphics.
The Cooling Tubes, One for the Processor, One for the Graphics), is about the width, and height of your little finger!
Solution?
Use a can of compressed air for computers, and blow out the Air Intake Duct. (AC adapter removed,{Charger}, and battery removed)
Do NOT blow out the Exhaust Duct!
Use Short Bursts of air, not Long bursts.
You will be blowing air directly on the System Fan. This fan is only designed to spin so fast. Spinning it faster than it was designed for, can lead to premature failure of the fan's bearings.
Take a look at this,

See Number 12? That is the Processor Thermal Cooling Assembly. The copper colored S-shaped piece is the Cooling Tube.
Number 14 is the System Fan.

SOURCE: No sound in my Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop
If the issue is no sound after reinstallation of Windows, then your issue is most likely a driver issue. Many items in the system will function with native windows drivers but the audio on a I6400 is not one of them. Installation of drivers in the correct order is critical to Dell portables functioning correctly. Correct driver order is:
Notebook System Software.
Chipset Utility
Video Driver
Audio Driver
Modem Driver
Network Driver
Wireless Driver
Touchpad Driver
Quickset Utility
All other applications and drivers (MS Office, Printer driver etc)
This system is also equipped with Media Direct capability. For Media Direct to function, the system's HDD must be prepared using the Media Direct installation CD, then WIndows installed, then the Media Direct application. If you have no plans to use media direct, this can be skipped (Most people do)

The battery has 5 small dots in it. Those are there for no reason. Those are actually LED lights. There's a button you can press. If we number the lights 1-2-3-4-5 with 1 being closest to the button, check the lights when you press the button. If 1-3-5 are lit, that means that you have a dead battery and needs to be replaced. Other than that, you're battery might still be working but nearing the end of its life. Goto support.dell.com -> drivers and downloads -> enter your service tag or system type -> download Dell Quickset. Once Quickset is installed, it will diagnose your battery automatically and let you know if your battery already needs a replacement. It is just sad that batteries are covered with a separate 1-year warranty only. You can also go to www.dellbatteryprogram.com and check if your battery was part of the Dell Battery Recall Program.
