Maxtor External Hard Drive not recognized

Hi, my Maxtor IV external hard drive (500GB) just suddenly stopped being recognized. I was saving files on it last night and it was fine, but when I got up this morning my computer was frozen, and when I rebooted my drive was no longer recognized. I tried removing it from the USB hub and reconnecting, but nothing happened, even when I tried different ports. My other USB connected items are working fine (including another external hard drive).

So I guess I have two questions:

1) How can I get my computer to recognize the hard drive? Keep in mind I'm not a really techy person, so any suggestions should be spelled out in painstaking detail. :)

2) If I can't get the computer to recognize it, how do I get the information off of it? I've got a lot of files on there I'd really like to recover.

I'm having the exact same problem.
I've tried everything from different USB cables, USB ports, restarted heaps.
Nothing works, but my other USB devices work fine.

Hi there my hard drive wont turn on. the power cord and usb cable is absolutley fine. I just stopped workin all of a sudden

The disk-drive has malfunctioned.

Search online for a professional "data recovery service".
For a significant fee, they can repair your disk-drive,
just long-enough to copy your files to a new disk-drive.

If it still has a valid WARRANTY, exercise the warranty to get it repaired/replaced.

If the warranty has expired, then open the case, remove the disk-drive, buy a new "compatible" disk-drive, connect it, and thus "revive" your external storage device.

External HDD no longer recognized by new win7 PC

Probably not the right answer for your problem. Mine is an external 1 TB Simple Drive. Mine wouldn't respond at all. I unplugged the power cable from the back of the hard drive and replugged it in and instantly it worked. I had tried rebooting the computer, plugging/unplugging over and over into the computer and that didn't work.

Sorry, Maxtor prog on poota is currupted. Have you recently downloaded programmes? When updating, some progs have a nasty side-effct of hitting some other programmes, not all the time, just your important ones?

You will have to uninstall and reinstall Maxtor prog, Not sure there might be a repair facility, not sure but it worth a try before uninstalling all.

I cannot copy files FROM my Western Digital 500GB

Hi,

Check the file system of your hard drive. If your PC is recognizing it, check if its a FAT or NTFS. If it is NTFS then you have to reformat it using your Mac and choose FAT. Mac OS recognizes NTFS as a read only drive. If you plan using it with your PC and MAC you should format it using your mac and choose MS-DOS in disc Utility. You cannot format the drive using your PC Computer with a FAT file system because of the capacity. Only Mac can format it with a FAT file system.

Hard drive goes out in the middle of copying

Most of the time the problem can be solved by using a cable that is really short and of good quality.

or try another usb slot and see whether the problem repeats.

Now if the external drive is FAT (most of them come from factory as FAT formatted) and u are trying to copy files grater than 4GB, it will fail as FAT cannot recognize files larger than 4GB. SO you may try to format the external drives into NTFS, if thats the case.
