I have a Pioneer VSX-D912. I just switched to HD Sat. When I hook into the component ports, I get no picture. When I use the DVD port I do get a picture.

For the audio portion, you must have either a digital coax, optical connection or analog L/R composite RCA jacks plugged into the "Sat.audio in" on the rear panel of the chassis. The other end of THAT connection must come from the "audio out/ variable out" from the T.V. or from the Sat.Dish box.

Depending on the projector-have you tried changing resolution on either DVD or projector?

What your unidentified TV >>requires<< is the BEST Video from every video source. That would be the DVD, SAT Box. It probably has multiple high-end video inputs, right?

What your receiver needs is at least a basic composite video connection to the TV so you can set it up and manage it.

A web search for "Pioneer VSX-D308 manual" will find the manual.

ALL of the BEST Audio should go directly to the Pioneer. That includes the SAT and DVD player.

Your TV can exist just fine with basic audio from the video sources. And you could still watch it/them without the Pioneer turned of if you want.

Assuming a single cause we need to isolate which single device is involved in all these failure modes.

"It comes out of both speakers" on what - the TV?

You don't say how the DVD interefaces with the receiver. Is the DVD feeding digital multichannel audio out at that time? Many DVD's are simple stereo until the show actually begins. You know that.

Try running an HDMI connection straight to the TV from the cable box. Result?

Substitute the other HDMI cable for the first one. Result?

If either one does NOT work satisfactorily we may have part of the problem isolated.

If they both work, the TV and cables are ok.

Attach the HDMI out of the receiver and IN to the TV and the HDMI from the Cable Box as before. Same result?

Can you try using Component Video out of the receiver to the TV just to change something in the equation? On my rig I 'see' no difference between HDMI and Component Video on my HDTV. A change in the result may help to isolate or work around part of your problem.



My $.02...

I'd recommend you go for minimal receiver involvement in the video side other than to send composite video to the TV from "Monitor Out" so you can set up and manage the receiver.

You can also send Cable- or Sat Box basic analog audio directly to the TV if it has inputs for audio. That way if you just want to watch the news or weather you don't need to fire up the Pioneer.

Your video sources (DVD, BD, Cable/Sat) will suffer fewer video anomalies if you send their best video directly to the TV and their best audio directly to the receiver. That way everything is handled only once by the best electronics you have for each function.

Couple of items come to mind.
In the menu of the receiver, is there a way to choose video and RGB?
Set the receiver to SAT
Connect the HD Cable Box to SAT
Check the TV is on Monitor RGB.
Check the input being used by the monitor RGB cables is selected on the TV.
Have a picture? NO, receiver has issues.
Yes? Do this with each input to confirm they work.
You can reset the whole receiver to factory by holding the tone button down and holding the standby button for three seconds. (This clears your speaker setups, too.)

A blue screen means the TV is not receiving a video signal. Check all connections, then try another player, cable, etc. Also, check DVD and TV AV settings.

By coaxial, do you mean the composite (yellow)? Either way you have to use the same style no matter what the cable. I mean, if you have s-video's IN to the reciever then you need S-videos OUT to the TV. ....Component IN to the reciever? then Component OUT to the TV. And so on. You cant have composite cords going into the reciever and use a component cord out to the TV (with the exception of a few models).

Receivers generally cannot or will not convert from one input type to a different output. That's not to say there may not be some high end models around that do that.

I have this receiver and have it setup as follows. Monitor out Component, S-Video, and the Composite video channel (since I have surround sound I have no interest in getting audio to the TV since I keep its speakers off anyways) to their different inputs on the TV. Warning on some TV's if you plug in S-Video you cannot then use composite on that same input channel as it will override and disable the composite. Then you only need to choose the appropriate input on the TV when you switch sources. In my case Tivo is S-Video, DVD is component, and most of my older video games and VCR are composite.

Having a TV that allows you to change the labels for the input channels is helpful with teaching others that may be less adept, or a snazzy remote that you can program to do everything at once.
