Canon ZR800 - transfering video to DVD recorder

No. The Canon USA web site says the Canon DW-100 has a USB terminal and works with "USB 2.0 Hi-Speed (with compatible Canon camcorders only)." In other words, the Canon DW-100 burner works only with Canon's USB 2.0 camcorders. I have a Canon ZR200. The ZR200 has Firewire 400 digital video output, not USB 2.0 output. The USB port on the ZR200 is ONLY for still images. Video will not and cannot be output through the USB port on the ZR200. (Page 121 in the ZR200 manual mentions using the USB port on your camcorder for transferring still JPEG images to your computer.) You need a DVD burner with "DV Input" (also called Firewire 400 or IEEE 1394) to hook up your camcorder to burn Mini-DV tapes onto DVD. The Sony VRDMC10 Stand Alone DVD Recorder/Player has DV Input. The ZR200 camcorder did not come with a Firewire cable, but you can buy one at any electronics store or at a cheaper price online. Make sure that you get the right kind of Firewire cable, 4-pin to 4-pin or 4-pin to 6-pin, whatever the DVD burner you choose requires. (Your ZR200 has a 4-pin DV port on the camera's end.) The disk from your cam should play on any standard dvd player.

The size of the disk is irrelevant.

You may even notice a smaller circle in the tray of your dvd player but even if you can't, it should still play.

Get a 4-pin Firewire cable. Plugs in just below power plug slot. What plug you need on the other end depends on your computer. You can get Firewires in 4 to 4 pin; 4 to 6 pin, and 4 pin to USB. My laptop is configured to take a 4 or 6 pin Firewire but my desktop only has USB. I transfered using 4 to 4 pin and it worked great. No drivers, no discs needed...at least with Vista. As soon as I plugged in the camera, I was asked to whether I wanted to transfer from biginning of tape or at currenty location. I chose from the beginning and the camera automatically rewound and strated to transfer to the PC. I don't know if it would work same way with 4-wire Firewire to USB but assume it would. Cables around $35 but I purchased at Circuit City for the going out of business discount. I also bought some SD cards so I can take snapshots and transfer them too for print.

Get a firewire and you should be fine.

One head cleaner cassette later the problem was fixed. Not only do you get Noise on the video you can actually get no video at all if theheads are dirty enough I guess.

Books have been written on this subject. The easy answer is go to a reputable camera store rather than an electronics store, tell them what you want to do with your camera and they will suggest models that suit you. All camcorders are now digital but some record on tape, some on a hard drive or DVD and some on memory cards. Those using tape don't have to compress the image so much and give better pictures. Normal digital video is quite good enough for an amateur, but high definition cameras are becoming cheaper. All cameras have sockets to transfer the recording to computers or other media or even play the recording direct to a television. Most recorded video benefits from transferring it to a computer, using an editing program, adding titles and burning it to a DVD. That way your friends will want to see your work more than once.
Finally, again I say - go to a camera store on a quiet day with plenty of time to listen to their advice. You'll learn more than anyone can tell you in an answer here.

Unfortunately, the Canon Z950 only offers transfer to your pc via firewire (Firewire/IEEE 1394 DV Terminal). Therefore your computer would need to have a firewire port.

i assume your using firewire-not usb right? use windows movie maker in xp or vista -should transfer ok if machine is pretty current-if very underpowered with little ram memory expect problems

I believe that camera only works with firewire. You might want to check with Canon to see if there is compatibility problems with Macs. I know it works on Windows computers.

You cannot connect a DV cable to a USB port. These are two incompatible standards. DV is also called Firewire, iLink or IEEE1394. You PC must have that kind of port for you to transfer your video from the ZR800 and you will need a DV (iLink/Firewire) cable. You cannot use USB cable they will not work. Check www.MyCableMart.com if you want an example. Most new PC come with 1 or 2 iLink/Firewire/1394 port.
