How do you take apart an air gap?

have you cleaned the connections where the filter connects . There is prob dust and dirt down inside the filter , keeping it from making a good connection. The zapping sound is from the electricty jumping the gap. A good cleaning of the inside should help. Try attaching a small hose to your vac to fit down inside the unit. give the electrical connections a good cleaning . If that dosen't work take unit apart and wipe down with alchol that you can buy at any drugstore

unhook your switch's and see if you get spark then

intermittent spark usually caused by failing ignition module in distributor cap, but first check air gap on pick up coil--should be 0.008-0.016 in. (0.2-0.4 mm). If air gap is good, replace module. If air gap is bad, adjust and see if problem resolves.

The nozzle size and gap completely are designed to each burner, if the bock water heater had a becket burner than you would be okay with the gap, if not then what I would do is check the manufactures manual for proper nozzles and gaps of electrode assembly

Hi and welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly. Most dishwashers are connected to the sink / garbage disposal via an Air Gap. The Air Gap gets debris inside it that blocks the drain passages. Check out this video on how to clean it:

does it have a screw tye hose clamp on it, the hose is made to be cut to the size of the air gap or the dirrectley to the disposal was the the disposal resently replaced ther is a plug in it that must be removed, could have blockage at the air gap next to faucet itcomes apart at the top for cleaning

Check the following to address this issue.


1. Air gap / Drain hoses
If there is an air gap (located in the sink, near the faucet), check to see if it is clogged. Unscrew the top cap and see if there is anything blocking inside. Note: If there is no air gap installed, the dishwasher might not drain properly.

If the drain hose is clogged, the dishwasher would not drain. If there is an air gap installed, it is very common that a hose going from the air gap into the garbage disposer is clogged. Remove and clean the hose. Make sure to reattach the hose before starting the dishwasher.

Note: If you recently had a garbage disposer installed, it is common to overlook removing the drain plug.

2. Broken belt
Some dishwasher models use a belt to drive the pump. Replace the belt if found broken.

Note: Sometimes the belt would just come off the pump. Even though it might not be broken, it is recommended that you replace the belt, because it is probably too stretched out.

3. Pump
Some models have two impellers inside the pump - one, wash impeller, takes care of the wash cycles, the other, drain impeller, drains the water out. If the drain impeller is broken (broken blades, shaft), the dishwasher would not drain. Replace any broken pump components.

4. Drain solenoid
Some models (for example most GE dishwashers) use a drain solenoid to drain water out. Sometimes the solenoid gets stuck, preventing the water from draining out. Try to free up the solenoid. If unsuccessful, you might have to replace the pump assembly.

5. Motor
If the motor is stuck, it is sometimes possible to free it up by manually spinning the motor.

Replace the motor if defective.

6. Timer
Replace if defective (note: uncommon problem).

take the air gap apart and clean it out. also clean hose from air gap to garbage disposal.. if the garbage disposal is new take it down and remove the plug where the drain hose from the air gap connects to it..

take the airgap apart and clean it out if that does not fix the problem then check either your drain or your garbage disposal to make sure there are no clogs. once you find the clog you will fix the problem.
