Turn off progressive scan without progressive tv?

Ok. So. I used to have a progressive scan TV with this combo hooked up, but I no longer have the TV. I'm trying to hook it up by s-video but i can't see the menu to turn off progressive scan. Any help? If someone could tell me the buttons to press on the remote to change this option, please do. (i.e. "menu, down, enter, down, down, enter, left, etc.")

Alright! Someone in another forum reminded me that I could reset the player. With a little bit of help from the manual I found online, the best plan of attack was to reset the player.

For future reference, to reset the player, hold both the REW and FF buttons on the front panel down for 5 seconds.

Nice! Thanks for that wonderful info. Now I can change my output to S-Video
(S-Video is the best option, right?)...TV in the living room has S-Video input :)

My zenith xbv343 dvd vcr combo has a problem when i put on a dvd it says progressive scan mode i cant see nothin else

Hello
That means the DVD you put into it to play has recordings with "progressive scan" mode. You have to change the mode of the DVD and TV which you wants to see to Progressive Scan mode to see the disc content. OK.

My memorex combo dvd & vhs player is not working right. can you help me? the vhs player works fine, but the dvd player display's a split screen on the tv with a large yellow box with the word PSCAN....

PSCAN is a short form for Progressive Scan - a line scanning format used for High Definition TV. Standard TVs use Interlaced scanning. On your DVD/VHS player, the VHS is an analogue signal recorded in interlaced mode so is fine for a standard TV. The DVD is a digital signal and cazn be processed for progressive scan output in order to produce a better picture on a High definition TV (or a TV capable of handling progressive scan). If you cannot to your TV via the HD outputs then you should be able to set the DVD player to output interlaced instead of progressive scan.

Blue screen with progressive scan mode displayed.how do i clear this its a zenith zhx313 dvd vcr combo

There are a few options here. If you have another TV that is "HDTV Ready" logo'd then you can hook this to the DVD player and go into the menu and remove the progressive scan setting then retry it on the original TV.
  1. Look for an external button or remote control button that turns progressive scan on or off.
  2. Remove any discs from inside the DVD tray with the power on, then hold down the Stop button on the front of the DVD player for about 10 seconds to see if this will reset the system to default.
  3. If no joy, you will need to contact the manufacturer for the exact reset steps for restoring to default settings.

I have a HD TV with cable and a go video DVD/VHS player hooked up. I went to change the time and accidentally changed the setting on the DVD player from auto scan (I think) from off to on and now when I...

It sounds like you may have enabled the progressive scan output on your DVD-VHS combo. This is a correct setting if your TV support it. However most DVD players that support progressive scan will not support an interlaced signal and a progressive signal at the same time.

It would appear that you are using a composite type cable (3 RCA ends. 1 for video and 2 for audio) for this hook up. This means you have two choices.

#1 Look in the manual for the unit for the FACTORY Reset option. Its usually a combination of plugging the unit in while holding the power button or something similar to that. Without a model # I can't help any further with this option.

#2 Use a component video cable (3 RCA red/green/blue) to plug your DVD/VHS player into a compatible input on your HD TV. Your TV will pick up the progressive scan output from the unit and give you back your on screen display. At this point you can go back into the menu and disable progressive scan. And now just reverse the process to plug the DVD player back in using the composite cable.

It should be noted that if you have a progressive scan TV which HD TV's support you will get a better picture if you use the Component video cables instead of switching back to the composite cable. If you decide to use the component cables you will still need to run audio cables though.

Best of luck.

Zenith DVT412

If you are using analog video output to connect to your tv set and accidentally selected progressive scan from the setup menu you will loose the analog signal output.
Turn the unit on with no dvd inside and after the " no disc" message press stop (on the front pannel button) holding it for about 5 seconds. It will restore the original progressive scan configuration (value= no).

Turn off progressive scan mode

If you set progressive scant On by accident, you must reset the unit. Remove any disc from the unit and close the disc tray. See that "disc" is displayed on the display window. Now press STOP and hold it for more than 5 seconds before releasing it. The video output will be restored to the standard setting and picture will once again be visible on a conventional analog TV or monitor.
