Even if I set it to MathIO and press the SD button, it only shows up as a decimal. Is it only capable of simplifying square roots?
It can handle square root but if result requires too much display space it will be displayed as a decimal.As to higher order roots such as cube , 4th and higher they are displayed as decimal. Sorry, there is nothing you can do about it.

To solve a cubed root problem with the Casio fx-300ES:
Your calculator has dual for almost all of the keys. You can easily see which keys have dual functions the "yellow functions" these are printed right above the key. The square root key is a dual function key and therefore it not only does square roots, it also does cubed roots but in order to use it you have to hit "Shift"
3 Step Instructions;
1. Hit "Shift" key
2. Then hit square root key and enter the value
3. Hit "equal" key
Hope this helps...

Hello,
Generally, MathIO gives results in fractions or radicals. But sometimes it does not. I tried multiplying or dividing fractions or radicals by integer numbers, and once in while I got a decimal result and was unable to cast it into a fraction or a radical. I was not able to find the pattern.
In lineIO you only get decimal results.
What can one tell you that you cannot determine for yourself? If you appreciate the functionalities of the MathIO, it seems like an insignificant price to pay to press ONE button to switch between displays. It needs to be done ONLY once, for the last result one wants to record.
Your calculator, Your rules. But sometimes one cannot eat the cake and have it too.
