I have a Targus 4 hub usb 2 port model no. PAUH217U. I am using it on an older laptop computer that has 1 usb port. On the Targus there is a pin that looks like it is for an external power supply. Is this for an external supply and if so what is the voltage. Should I use an external power supply on it?
Most USB hubs do not need an external power supply, except when a connected USB device draws more power than the computer/laptop USB port can supply. In this case an external power supply will need to be connected to the USB hub.
Normally this would be a 5 volt power supply, but make sure the polarity on the connector matches the power connector on the hub, check the label on the hub, sometimes it states to power requirements of the hub as well as the polarity on the connector. Normally the pin on the hub's power connector is positive (ie. +5V)
I used a nokia charger it is 5 volta and 300Ma
This will probably do the trick...http://www.cnaweb.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=2892
My Targus 4-port PA055U has printed below the power input 5V 2.6A. Finding the right AC adapter has been impossible.
I got the same questio , i sen it to targus and they said that in deed is a port for ac adapter but there no info about the voltage either in the manual, the package, the hardware or in any site somebody know which is the correct adapter
Mine is model # PA055.. Power requirements are printed on the hub.
5V@ 2.1A (center pin is POS) getting ready to run a usb mouse & keyboard thru with NO power supply.. Will post updates..
My Targus hub has a split input/power lead. The power lead is red (ONLY supplies power) so both must be plugged in when using high power devices which sort of defeats the object of the bus if you have run out of spare ports as I have! I presume the power input socket of 5V and 2.6A max is a way around using the power USB lead. Note that the hub itself uses very little power, the 2.6A limit is the most that it can pass on to devices plugged into it. So plugging a Nokia charger of some 300mA will achieve nothing as the bus as it is can draw 100mA per socket to pass on.
My scanner draws 500mA and I presume the external HDD draws quite a lot too so I've had to plug these directly into the computer USB until I can find a power source for the hub.
Find any adapter that is a typical AC-DC adapter at 5V, the higher the Amperage the better (not above 2.6A of course). It is also amazing that this would need 2600mA! typical adapters provide a couple hundred mA... I found a 5V AC adapter providing 1.5A but the attachment is incorrect so I am severing the end and ataching one that fits. I'll update if it works!

ON MINE IT IS STATED ON THE ACTUAL HUB: 5V 2.6A

It may not be able to support 4-high drawing devices at only 1.5A and not 2.6, but very feew devices use >500mA. I'll update if it works!
NOTE: My model is PA055 U (4-Port USB Hub) and all USB devices use 5V so all hubs would need a 5V source, so while it is not the same model, thi solution is universal.
Plugged in a Webcam and USB-powered speakers to PC via Targus 4-port USB hub ACH65US and PC suffered severe slow down. Figured it was the new Tragus hub so re-routed webcam and speakers to individual existing USB ports and now all works quickly. This troubleshooting site has confirmed that is a common issue - not the fault of the 4-port hub but lack of knowledge about the impact on the USB power system of plugging in to many unpowered peripherals. Thanks. MikeL
My Targus hub has 2 input leads, one is red which I recall must be used when the hub has its own power supply. The hub itself will not draw 2.6 amps, that is the max it can pass on to plugged in devices. If you go to your device manager>usb controllers>generic usb hub>properties>power it will tell you what each device that is plugged into the hub will need to operate.
The device itself doesn't require 2.6A The 2.6A is provides power to connected devices the require power; e.g. lazer mouse, USB drive, external hard.
