I see what you mean, I got out my other son's ds and I can see that the backlight is there, but the screen is still dark. Is there a way to reset the whole thing? I think if I could reset it it would start? The unbroken one has a reset button on the back, the broken one does not.I see what you mean, I got out my other son's ds and I can see that the backlight is there, but the screen is still dark. I think there is a button on the bottom left of the bottom touchscreen where when you turn on the system even if there is no picture you should be able to tap it and change the screens brightness just by pressing this button. Its in the very bottom left corner
This may not be the answer you are looking for but the "reset" button on the ds lite that your son has just resets the system as in it just turns it off and restarts it. I think the "reset" you are referring to is you want to wipe everything off and make it as it was when it was never used before. The flaw with the DS lite is there is no way to do this unless you can convince a tech for nintendo to service it. There isn't any way for a consumer as in you or i to reset it in the means you are referring to. I'm sorry. There may be an internal problem as in the light was smashed or burnt out causing it to be so dark. If i find anything else on the subject i will post it for you

Check on Ebay, u can get the TOP lcd if it's that... I have read on how to replace it, and u will need to desolder the 2 speakers from the lcd!, here is a page on how to dissasemble it!
When you boot the Nintendo DS you can change the illumination settings in the main menu. One the main menu, you will find a sunny symbol in the lower left corner of the screen. Click on that and you should be able to change the level of illumination. If you are also wondering if you can change the brightness during game play, you can't. Games such as Mario 64 DS come with support for brightness change but otherwise you have to do it before game play.
Less than a year from buying date, then you must have a warranty from Nintendo so try contact their customer service and they should repair it for free.
Anyway if only the top screen then that problem might be a loosen top screen ribbon cable but you have to dismantle the unit to put it right in the connector and you gonna need tools and some video guides you can find in youtube.
If not enough confident about and dont have a warranty then take it to a repair shop.
