SOURCE: CAN I POWER MY FISH FINDER GOING DIRECTLY TO THE

Yes you can. Basically the red wire goes to the fuse box connection. The fuse box should then be wired into the positive battery terminal. The black wire is the negative ground wire and needs to go directly back to your negative battery terminal or to a common negative buss bar.

SOURCE: THE UNIT WILL POWER UP

Hello
Just reset the unit to its factory settings first and see whether it helps you. To get it to its factory reset:
1# Highlight Restore Defaults on the Setup menu
2# Use the RIGHT 4-Way Cursor Control key to initiate restoring defaults.

3# The Confirm dialog box will appear. To reset the defaults, press the RIGHT
Cursor key once more. To cancel Restore Defaults, press the LEFT Cursor key.
Before doing this rest option make sure that the battery voltage at the power connector is at least 10 Volts with device on load. Correct any known problems incuding removing corrosion from the battery terminals or wiring , or actually replacing the battery if necessary. Anyway, the voltage at the supply terminal to the device should be more han or equal to 10VDC, at device in ON condition. OK.

SOURCE: My hummingbird rf15 smartcast fish finder has

The Smartcast system uses the wireless version of a simple transducer and thermometer to locate fish, show structure and water temperature. From your description, it sounds like the transducer portion of the Smartcast device has stopped working.
Transducers are both simple and complex, sturdy and delicate. Here is a Science Minute: A fish finder electrical signal is sent to the transducer. The electrical signal to energize the transducer crystal is generated by an amplifier. The energized crystal reverberates at a particular frequency, to convert the electrical signal into mechanical acoustic or sound energy. The acoustic energy or sound waves causes oscillation of the water molecules through which the sound travels. The sound is pulsed out in a defined beam. These do not travel out in a straight line but in a wave pattern. The acoustic pulse travels through the water at a rate of approximately 4800 ft (1500m) per second in saltwater and 4920 ft/sec in fresh water.

The problem is that the crystal in all transducers (permanent mount, thru-hull mount and castable) is delicate. It is a crystal. Unfortunately the warranty on most of these is six months, and unless yours is newer than that, you may need to buy a replacement castable. The handheld unit should still work. While I think the idea of knowing what is "over there" is a good one for shore fishing, I haven't bought these systems because I could never get over the idea that repetitive casting of a crystal, no matter how well-housed, was a good idea. Good luck.
