Top section of the picture gets reversed and compressed

Intermittently the picture in the top 6-8" of the screen compresses into multiple smaller horizontal sections of different sizes and with portions appearing to be upside down. The bottom portion of the screen is unaffected. I tried swapping the coaxial cable but the problem continued. If I wiggle the coaxial cable input it sometimes helps but I've tested the TV with just an s-video input and also with no inputs and the same thing happens. I have run all the components through another tv (15") and did not see the issue occur in the other tv. Initially there was a thin white line running horizontally across the screen with the upper section becoming slightly blurry. If I tapped the tv the line would often disapper. Does anyone know what may be the causing the problem and if so whether its worth trying to have it fixed? Thank you for any assistance or input. Simon

Dear simon, Seems like a simple problem. In all likelihood, one of the Electrolytic Capacitors in the vertical Output stages has failed. It could also be a cold / dry solder, as symptoms seem to disappear when you tap the set. But, do not try anything thing at home. A proffessional Techie should fix it up in 15-20 mins. Definitely worth the spend.

Check and replace all the electrolytic capacitors at the vertical output section circuit. There will be 5 or 6 of them. Replace all at same time. If it do not help you, you have to enter its service mode option to adjust the vertical leanearity of the picture. It is a skilled job. The service mode window is entirely different to that of Menu window. You must have through knowledge in electronics to follow. Improper adjustment to this window might make TV irrepairable.

My tv has this lines that bend over the front top of the screen and when an object moves through the lines the image appers from the the top of where the line begins...and the tv goes black every once and...

This sounds like a vertical deflection fault. There are some components that are failing in the vertical deflection area that are starting to fail. It is very common in many of the sets that there are electrolytic capacitors in the vertical amp section that are gong out of specifications.

When you have at the top or the bottom of the screen where the vertical axis is compressed, and the picture in the compressed area looks like it is inverted and going over on itself, this is called "vertical fold-over".

An experienced TV service technician should be able to service this for you.

Toshiba TV CX2789K Horizontal Line

Failure in the vertical deflection amplifier section. This is usualy from failed components, and sometimes cold solder connections. Most of the time, I found bad capacitors, and sometimes the output IC or transistors (depending on the model type) that have failed.

Take the set to a service center for an estimate. You may find it more feasible to buy a new set depending on the parts that failed and the time involved to do the work.

1GB XD pic card..........

Do you mean, you use Winzip or some program to compress one or more of your pictures (jpgs) into a zip file? ZIP file will not modify your JPGs, so your JPG pictures would be the same quality before and after the zip process. JPG itself is a way to compress the original picture that your camera took. On some cameras, you can specify the quality of your pictures (not only resolution), and that determines how much the camera will try to compress the original picture. See link below for example pictures of different JPG qualities. Because JPG is already a compressed file, Winzip or other compression program usually can not compress it much smaller. Some camera allows you to save the pictures in RAW mode, and there is no JPG compression there, so in theory, the picture have more details. And you would be able to use Winzip to make the file smaller. Here is a link that explains JPG in more details http://www.brycetech.com/tutor/windows/jpeg_compression.html
