Bad water & ice cube taste

Our Kitchenaid Superba KSRG25FKBL15 has bad tasting water and ice cubes. We replaced the copper tubing which delivers the water to the fridge and that didn't help. We replaced the copper tubing again with plastic tubing...no better. Any suggestions? Our tap water doesn't taste this bad. We bought a Kenmore french door fridge with water dispenser in the door in July 2008. The fridge has a filter. A few weeks after the fridge came the water and ice started tasting really bad, unlike any bad water taste I have ever tasted. Our tap water is fine. The bad taste appears to be random. Sometimes you get a cup full of nasty water and sometimes it tastes fine.

Purchased a new Kenmore Elite refrigerator with a water dispenser.  At first, the water and ice tasted fine.  After a month, both the water and ice had a funny taste and smelled.  Despite throwing away a few loads of ice and running the water, the problem keeps coming back.  Could it be the new supply line that was installed.  I noticed that the installer did not do anything but remove the line and install it without cleaning it in any manner.  Would a new supply line eliminate the problem?

Hello redwood City
Welcome

You said,

First you must know you have a 1 year warranty and can have them come out to fix anything, no charge. If it persists. You will have to get tough and you , MUST INSIST THEY REPLACE YOUR FRIDGE

When installing the water line these were a part of the directions!
Did you do this before connecting the water line to your fridge?
"Place the free end of the tubing in a container or sink, and
turn ON the main water supply. Flush the tubing until water is
clear. Turn OFF the shutoff valve on the water pipe. Coil the
copper tubing."

Whirlpool remedy
Off-taste, odor or gray color in the ice
1.Are the plumbing connections new, causing discolored or
off-flavored ice? Discard the first few batches of ice.
2.Have the ice cubes been stored too long? Throw old ice
away and make a new supply.
3.Does the freezer and ice storage bin need to be cleaned?
See “Cleaning” or “Ice Maker and Storage Bin.”
4.Has food in the freezer or refrigerator been wrapped
properly? Use airtight, moisture-proof packaging to help
prevent odor transfer to stored food.
5.Does the water contain minerals (such as sulfur)? A filter
may need to be installed to remove the minerals.
6. Is there a water filter installed on the refrigerator? Gray or
dark discoloration in ice indicates that the water filtration
system needs additional flushing. Run additional water
through the water dispenser to flush the water filtration
system more thoroughly (at least 2 to 3 gal. [8 to 12 L] or 6 to
7 minutes initially). Discard discolored ice.

Let me know what works,
Thank You ,
HUUUM!!

Nasty tasting ice cubes

Change the supply line to the plastic tube line or copper. Do not use a braided plastic or metal braided line these will make the water taste bad. Changed mine to the plastic line and cured mine, no filters needed.

Metalic taste in cold water and ice cubes from refrigerator

I had a similar problem and I was able to get rid of it by replacing the copper lines that go to the refrigerator with plastic ones. It didn't make any sense to me since the pipes are all copper, but the taste is gone and hasn't come back.

Water smelly bad taste. Sat for two months during kitchen remodel. Filter has been changed, and water flushed and ice cube ran several times. Can plastci lines be replaced? thanks.

When the fridge was turned off during that time ,the water left over inside the reservoir(plastic container inside the refrigerator side where the water keeps cycling and staying cold) might gone bad and contaminated the reservoir,in this case the reservoir needs to be replaced. But first try replacing the water supply line , if it's copper or a gray plastic pipe ,also could give bad taste to water.

Ice maker water taste like chlorine but tap tastes fine

Put a in-line water filter on the water line if you want. The taste is from the food and items you have in the refrigerator. Clean it out and keep your items in proper storage. Ice collects the smells in the line and the fridge. Change your ice that is sitting in the bin, wask out the bin with water and baking soda. Hope this helps.

Bad water & ice cube taste

then change your filter. the new filter could be different with the old filter. check the new filter, see if there is odor removal and taste removal with it.

if not then get the filter with carbon filter, odor and taste removal.

then with a new filter, run about 5 gallons of water before using the water for drinking.

Bad water & ice cube taste

the feed line of the water source is bad replace it you will also need to clean the ice makers insides to remove the rest of the contamination
and 2 more suggestions:1) change the filter - older refers have the filter in the water line serving the ice maker - newer refers have the water filter in the refer (it looks much like an auto oil filter); 2) do not store ice for extended periods when ice use is not high e.g. during cooler months. Unless you use a full basket of ice over say a few weeks you should dump all and start over periodically.
thanks.

Very bad tasting/smelling water and ice cubes - Superba KSRS27QAAL05

Since I found that the water itself being fed to the trays and being dispensed was bad. I replace the nylon, reinforced plastice icemaker hose with 1/4" copper supply line. That, along with purging the hopper (getting rid of) any old ice as well as washing the hopper out real good and giving the freezer a general cleaning - seemed to do the trick. No repugnant odor or taste. (I didn't even replace the filter- the cycle is every 6 mos.)

Hope this helps others who may be experiencing this same prob with this type of side by side appliance.

Good luck!
