Re: how to change the battery on my BE365-CAM-716 Schlage...
Problem fixed by having my wife look it up on the Schlage website. The deadbolt has a flash memory so your combinations and codes will not be lost when the batteries are changed.

To change the battery on the BE365, you need to remove the inside cover by removing the two screws (one above and one below the deadbolt knob). Be careful to tuck the wires inside the lock so that they will not be crimped when you put the cover back on.
Do you here a beep and see a flashing light? Usually if pressing the Schlage button unlocks the deadbolt, your installation was done improperly. The cam on the base plate must be vertical and the bolt must be correctly installed.
You will always be able to lock and unlock the deadbolt with the inside thumb knob.
Does my Schlage BE365-CAM BE365CAM505 have a feature that allows it to automatically lock the deadbolt without having to enter code and turn the dial? Sort of. The lock has what is called the "turnlock" feature. When enabled, you have to only push the Schlage button, then manually turn the dial. When disabled, you have to enter the user code, then turn the dial.
To enable/disable this feature, enter your Programming Code--press the Schlage button--Press 7.
Each time you do this, you toggle between enabled and disabled.

"How can I program my electronic keypad lock when the instructions with the Programming Code have been lost?" The back plate of the keypad side of the lock on the exterior of the door has a sticker which includes the serial number, six digit programming code and two pre-programmed four digit user codes. The lock must be disassembled to a point the exterior of the lock can be pulled away from the door and the information on the sticker made note of.

Notice that the above is a .pdf filetype. That means that you need to have Adobe Reader or similar installed on your computer to view it. So if you are unable to view the file, download (for free) and install Adobe Reader first. You can get it here:

Then scroll down to this heading on that page: Electronic Security-Keypad Deadbolt BE365 There's a wealth of info under that heading. You will be able to see a PDF file of the original print instructions, as well as a video of how to install the lock. This is useful because there should be a sticker to be found on the backside of the keypad, with the code number that you need to reprogram the lock. This installation video (second item down) will be useful to allow you to disassemble it and view the sticker. This is also a great time to change the 9-volt battery! The seventh item under that same header is a video which walks you through how to reprogram the keypad to your new code, using that programming code that you found on the backside of the keypad.
A note about the PDF files: If you cannot view a given file, you need to first install Adobe reader. You can get the free download from here:
Yes, it uses a standard 9-volt battery with an average lifetime of 3 years. On this page is a video which shows low battery indications and how to change the battery:

Why can my electronic keypad deadbolt (BE365) be unlocked without a four digit user code when I press the "Schlage" button? This is most likely due to an installation error. When the lock is assembled on the door, two steps of the installation must be followed to insure proper operation. The deadbolt must be installed in the door edge with the bolt retracted, and the gray plastic cam on the interior mounting plate, through which the flat metal driver bar passes, must be pointed down (see below). The gray plastic cam has a triangle embossed on the end opposite the driver bar which should align with a matching triangle on the orange plastic cover plate below. These instructions are also embossed on the orange plastic plate. Troubleshooting Image 2 If the cam is improperly aligned, the lock must be disassembled to a point where, with the bolt retracted, the cam can be turned to the correct position without moving the bolt. This will require withdrawing the flat driver bar completely from the cam before turning the cam. The driver bar will then pass through the cam at a forty-five degree angle when the lock is reassembled.
