problem is almost certainly the circular element. these sometimes fail with obvious damage but not always. check continuity across the element to be sure. you are right about element fixing. there is no reason why the design should'nt allow removal from the front as many do but i suppose the guys who make these things don't have to fix them.

Two things sharyn, first check the breakers. It is possible that one of two that control the stove tripped...they are in tandem. Shut them off and back on. If no fix: You'll have to remove and test the element. (if more than one element is involved here...it might be the thermostat) Breakers off, pull the element out and have someone take an ohm meter and test the unit. Still no good? Then it will be the thermostat or relay. Let me know what you find.

It could be that the element around the fan (which is obscured by metal plate) has gone. Remove the metal plate in front of the fan, and test with a multimeter to see if a current gets through it...
Easy to order and replace yourself

My Smeg cooker worked fine for 5 years. Then I noticed that the fan which stays on after you turn off the oven did not ever turn off, unless you switched the oven off at the fuse box. I think this is a fan that cools the oven down, but some bit of it is now broken because it doesn't realise that the oven has cooled down. It smells funny when you first turn it on, so I don't know if that is an electrical fault smell. Model possibly 70cm A420-5, but could be an earlier model (bought in April 2000). Is double oven with 4 rings on top, 70cm wide.

Phew! I'm very grateful for all that freetek but it certainly sounds like I may have a problem outside of my ability. I guess I will have to bite the bullet and get some expensive engineer to come in and sort it.
As a layman I just can't understand how it works fine for 5 years and without any alterations made simply stops! :-(
Thanks for all the advice, I will post back when and if I solve the problem, or wether in simply ends on the dump!!!
