Honda GX390: Starts OK on idle, idles for 20 seconds or so and dies. Also dies if attempt to increase throttle. Gasoline is new. Cleaned carb and jets - no help. Installed NEW carb, new spacers, new gaskets: SAME PROBLEM, NO CHANGE! Yes, gas is in tank and it's new. Yes, the gas lever is in the ON position. Yes, it idles with the choke in OFF position. NO it will not run more than a minute, less than that if you attempt to increase throttle. Gas lid vent WORKS; fuel line is clear of obstruction and works fine. ON/OFF switch is ON. Changed oil to proper level with new oil: 10W40; - not over-filled or under filled. It's 8 years old but only used about 10 to 15 hours per year since new. Nothing I've done has changed a thing (except drain cash from my pocket). What does it take to make this machine work again?
I too suspected the magneto... since everything else I could think of was already repaired or replaced. Can you provide information regarding how to replace the magneto, or if not, can you direct me to a reliable source that can (short of "see my local dealer")?

May I suggest checking along the fuel line and its attachments for a very minor air leak. The minute it sucks air it will stop. Check any rubber washers or O rings too.
Carb needs cleaned out. If you stored it with out turning gas off and running it dry will cause it to gum the carb. Dry gas might help. You might try using carb cleaner through the air filter intake. have someone help you. get it started and keep gunning it while putting carb cleaner into it. start slow. This should take care of it. Might also need to replace plugs. But I do believe it is the carb. I work on small engines.
I would check the govoner spring, maybe it is worn out or isn't on correctly.
If this isn't the case I would check the fuel air mixture screws if your carburator has them, maybe it is getting too much fuel when the throttle is turned up.
Ok I have r Royobi Tiller (30CC Gas) And last year it ran fine after rebuilding the Carb. This year it was "hard starts" Idles fine, (Tiny whisps of blue smoke in exhaust with correct ratio) Even seems to run better with the choke "on" but still...at idle only. as soon as I touch the throttle...its bogs down in tune with how much gas I give it. Little throttle? Little bog down, Little more throttle? Almost stalls, a normal throttle rev? it stalls dead! Then starts right back up again in 1 pull and idles fine again!? WTF? So after cleaning a clean carb again, (twice) and seeing no change I thought I'd go look at the original diaphragm and compare it with the rebuild kit diaphragm (which is the one in the carb.) And guess what? The replacement has a larger rivet by a factor of "2". So basically it was flooding the carb, I bent the needle tang down, better but no cigar. But I could rev it half way now. A second disassemble to bend it yet a bit further and Vrooom vroom vrooom ****! So check your needle valve even though you think its 100%. (Especially if you rebuilt the carb with a kit!)
Your carburetor needs cleaned. Disassemble carb. and spray with carb. cleaner. Make sure that the small screen is free of debris. Use a Den Tek Brush, (http://www.dentek.com/shop.php?target=products&product_id=7), to clean the small portals in the carb. Reassemble and start. If this doesn't work for you then you will have to buy a carb. kit and replace all appropriate parts. If you need further assistance, just let me know.
