You need to check the specifications of your laptop it may not be able to run Windows 7.
You need these specs:

  • 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor

  • 1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)

  • DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver

If i need to reinstall a windows bios to an inspirion 1720 do i have to reinstall vista or can i install windows 7

Wipe the hard drive and do the OS install. If your unit came with Vista and you install Win 7 there may be some driver incompatibility. Check that out to be on safe side.

Dell inspiron 1720 vista admin password recovery?

If you are running Windows 7, if you type in the wrong password once, it normally says reset password... below the box for the password. Insert a removable disk (such as USB, floppy disk, etc.)
and follow the prompts.

I have install win 7 for my dell inspiron 6400 laptop but no modem & no video controler

You need to go to Dell Support pages online and download the drivers for your laptop model, if they dont show a windows 7 driver then try the vista or xp one they list, should still work.

Installed new HD into Dell 1720 Inspiron after getting the 0146 errr code. Once I installed the HD I began the installation of Vista. It almost finished then the screen went back with the cursor...

you need to format the hdd first before you can successfully install Vista.

try booting from cd/dvd by pressing F12 on the Dell screen.

- Select optical disk drive dvd/cdrw and press Enter
- Press Any key to boot from CD or keep tapping the spacebar.
- If you see Windows Setup EMS enbaled, press Enter.
- Keep clicking next until you are asked "Where do you want to install windows?"
- Click Drive options Advance
- Click or select to highlight the partition to where you want to install Vista
- on that same windows, click "Delete" and OK
- Click "NEW" and then click "Apply"
- Click "Format" and then "OK"
- After that, you may now click "Next"
Now windows vista should be installed in your computer and on its last boot, it will ask you to create a profile (username and password).
