The cable may have popped out of the head of the weed eater. Just take the lower piece and spin the cable and the weed eater head opposite directions it will eventually fall into place to be able to engage again.take a deep well socket and under it in the top and tap it in a little bit to eliminate the problem for the future.
That is called a quick-change shaft I believe. You need to take it apart at the connection and make sure that the two pieces on the inside of each piece of shaft are inner locking with each other. One piece of drive shaft should slip into the other.
If that doesn't do it, then you may have broke one of the pieces of shaft.
