Northstar Explorer 660 Gps/Chartplotter/Sounder Combo With Tm Transducer Logo

My Northstar 660 often needs a very long time (15min-2 hours!) before it can determine my position. In the "satellite" menu I can see that the GPS has found a number (5-7) satellites but the bars are all blue, In the top menu (dialogue menu) it says "acuiring" all the time until the bars are green and the position is set. This problem especially occurs when it was a long time (1>week) since I used the GPS whereas it works just normal if I used it the day before.

SOURCE: Gps loses signal

It would be good to make sure that the 951 software is up to date. The most recent software upgrade includes new code required due to changes that have been made to the GPS system. You can download the software for free from the Northstar web site but it requires a loader cable, power supply and a Windows based PC to perform the update. Most Noprthstar dealers know how to do this but they will charge for their time. The GPS antenna should be mounted where it has a 360 degree uninhibited view of the sky right down to the horizon to get best performance. Basicially any conductive material including pigmented paint, tinted glass or wet canvas can block the signal. Inspect the GPS coaxial cable and it's connections for any signs of corrosion or contamination. Sometimes just removing and reinstalling the connections is enough to remove contamination and get better performance. If in doubt concerning the coax and it's connections, temporaily substitute a new coax assy by-passing the existing cable to see if this makes a difference. You can monitor changes from the GPS status page. See the user manual for information concerning how to understand the numbers being presented. You should be tracking at least 4 SATs with signal levels higher than 30. Generally 95% of all GPS signal issues are related to the coax or its connections.

How long should it take a garage to change an alternator on a northstar engine? 97 Cadillac eldorado

Less than 15min. But the problem is that most shops charges by the hour. say labor is 80$ an hour. If it takes them 15min. You will have to pay the 80$ in labor. And if it takes 1 hr. 15min. You will be charged for 2hrs. Of labor cost.

Trackfish 6600 stops and starts again by himself many times in a few minutes; first screen map thouthand miles away from real boat position !

Try a factory reset - that worked for me when my Northstar Explorer 660 stopped by itself again and again. You find this reset commando by pressing MENU twice and then under Systems menu, if I remember it correctly. There is also a RAM Clear commando. This is done by holding the MENU button pressed when the GPS is switched off. Keep it pressed while switchin on the GPS, still holding the button pressed until the RAM Clear menu appears. You will probably loose all waypoints etc. by doing this so try Factory Reset as your first alternative. Good Luck! // Jonas, Sweden

Will not lock on satellites

First go into your menu and find GPS then go to restart gps and enter and see if it will reset. If not you will need to up date your unit as I am going to have to try once I recive the one and only card that the tech has to try this. Navman has been bought out by Norhtstar and you can call 1-800-628-4487 for support. They are eastern time and I did not get their open hours but I called at 6:50 AM PST and was able to talk to a live tech for help. The card that he sent will be here next week so I will be able to try fix on the Sat after as our boat is at its summer home. If my (or your) unit is too old then he said this too may not work but first try the restart GPS. Good luck, if it does not work for me then I buy a new and better unit as there is a flat rate charge from Northstar to repair of $350.00 !!!!

Nuvi 660 update firmware offers a g CHIP choice

Chipset "G" is an update of the GPS firmware for the SiRFstarIII receiver in the flip up antenna. I would update the firmware because it has updates to help improve satellite acquisition.

Won't pick up satellites

It fixed my garmin Nuvi 660:
With the unit off press firmly on the upper left hand corner of the screen with the tip of your finger.

2. Press the power button. When you see the screen light up let go of the power button but continue to press on the upper left hand corner of the screen until you receive the message "Do You Really Want to Start Up In Maintenance Mode?"

3. Say Yes and then select the third Option "Clear All User Data" and then say Yes.
4. The unit will then start up and ask you to set some preferences.

5. Once the unit is on the Main Menu please sit it in a safe place outside with a clear view of the sky for about 10 minutes and let it lock on to the satellites.

Can't get satellite fix

Keep in mind that GPS uses "Line Of Sight" for success.... in other words, the unit satellite antenna needs to pick up 3-6 GPS sats in ourder to determine one's lat/long position. Make sure the antenna is clearly visable to the sky.

If this is not the issue... Warranty replacement may be the only option where you bought it.

Garmin Nuvi takes a long time to Acquire satellite

No. 98% of the time it took 45-56 seonds for your NUVI 660. Thats the compagny set up time acquisition and it did very well.

Be sur you had your flip antenna parallel to earth surface.
660 has THE BEST SIRF Chipset for acquiring satellite.

I had 2 NUVI 660 since 2 years. It work much better than those new 7xx series who it really took 2-3 minutes to acquire satellite.

Be sure you update your version to the last one.

Receiver inop.

No problem reported , i had 2 NUVI 660 in front of me. Did you flip the antenna parallel to earth surface. Wait 45-56 seconds and you should get a signal.

If your are on vertical position with you GPS . Place the antenna at 90 degres so she will be paralell to earth.

You should get a signal very quickly. No other report this problem.

Make sure you had also the last update via the web updater

Best regards
