It is important to start from the plug point and check the continuity to the switch assembly. Now use a multimeter to check, check from the plug top to the switch and then the contacts of the switch to the motor. Once this is confirmed we are certain that the power cord the switch is working. If not these are to be suspected or replaced.
Now if there is continuity to the motor but without any action then the motor must be checked in detail.
1. Check the brushes , if worn it will not contact and so will not work.
2. If the commutator has worn out the brushes wont contact , try and clean using an emery paper on the brushes and the commutator.
3. If the coil winding is faulty then motor must be replaced if not rewound.
4. finally check if there is play on the bushes/bearings as this can keep the brushes from contacting.- check the springs for tension.
