Tip & How-To about Heating & Cooling

How to Get Your Air Conditioner Hot Weather Ready

Here are tips to make sure you air conditioner is ready for the hot weather.

Check your Filters
A dirty filter can cause you system to have to work that much harder, and it's already working hard in the heat of Summer. Replace air filters that are dirty so that more air can flow through and help keep you cool.

Get Rid of Debris around your AC unit
Outside ac units are exposed to the elements year round and can be impacted by what is happening outside. Clean any debris off of your ac unit and away from the exterior. You may also want to protect it from the sun so that it doesn't get too hot and have to work even harder.

Upgrade to a Programmable Thermostat
A programmable thermostat allows you to set the temperature to a constant temperature while you are home. You can also have it adjust based on your habits, such as a warmer temp when you are away from the home and cooler when you are home. A programmable thermostat can also help with your energy bill.

ruud achiever 10 froze up but the fan works but not getting cool air flow through house. what is causing this?

The most common things that will cause a system to freeze up are:
1. Dirty air filters
2. Dirty evaporator coil
3. Indoor fan motor not running
4. Blocked/restricted return air flow
5. Low on refrigerant charge ( most common)

I would start with the filters. When the system is froze up, turn off the "cool" and just have the fan set to on. Make sure there is no more ice anywhere, turn the system back on and check your air flow throughout the house. If it feels normal, then filters, return, and fan should be good. The outside unit will have warm to hot air coming out of the fan if the charge is good enough, but that's not a perfect way to check, you will need gauges and a temp reader with knowledge of super-heat and sub-cooling to check the charge the right way. Hope this helps and good luck!

I purchased central air and a new furnace from sears in Feb. '07. I can not get the filter in the slot al the way It only fits in about 3/4 and stops. I already ruined 3 filters tring to do this. Please tell me how I can fix this and if I can't fix it can I still run my air conditioner in this hot muggy weather?

Not sure about the issue getting a filter in.. Maybe check the slots where the filter slides for any obstructions..

It is not a good idea to run it with no filter.. The system will get dirty and cause much bigger problems than you are having now..

If all eslse fails - try duckt taping the filter onto the outside of where it goes - and be sure to seal all edges with the tape - so all the air has to go through the filter..

Hope this helps !!

not cooling predictably

Possible causes are dirty filters, dirty condenser coil, dirty evaporator coil, or low referigerant charge. Any one of the conditions will affect heat transfer.

Check the filters in your indoor unit, If they seem to be clean and replaced on a regular basis, your evaporator coil is probably in good shape. Unfortunatley on some Weather King models even checking the evaporator coil is not possible due to the extensive amount of referigerent lines that block access to the coil without some major work including evacuating the refrigerant.

The most likely cause is a dirty outdoor condenser coil. On weather king models you will have to remove the casing that surrounds the coil because is is built in such a way that the condenser coil cannot be properly cleaned with the casing in place. Once it is removed make sure breaker is switched off and clean the coil with a water hose.

If your outdoor coil is not dirty then it is a refrigerent problem.
