Look in the manual about the voicemail indicator. It may need certain services not available in all areas. Ask your phone provider if that is the case.
Mainly, your phone has a voicemail. so dialing 1-800-VOICEMAIL is different that pressing the message play button locally on the machine. If you dial a phone number to check your messages, that is the problem. The messages are on your phone, and/or your voicemail service. I have had the same problem before and now again for the last week...I finally remembered what I did last time to solve it!

I put my "unavailable" Handset into the main cradle and left it there for a slow count of 20. That has reset the unavailable handset and returned the dial tone etc.

Maddening isnt' it!

You have to register the hand set in the main base. Place each handset in the base for 15 seconds minimum. It will change form unavailable to Ready when it grabs the signal from the base. If the power goes out, you will have to re-register each hand set in the base before you use them again.

Each handset has to sit in the base cradle for at least 15 seconds to register. It should say ready within a few seconds. Same thing after the power shuts off. All handsets have to be re-registered in the main base set.

Phones are a bit odd in this case. They key layout changes a bit when you are entering text into the phone, rather than dialing a number outside of a menu. Look carefully at the keys, there is a button that give you access to symbols, it will be labeled so in the same text and color the pause letters are. What i mean is there are the numbers and letters on the surface of the button, but what you want to pay attention to is the secondary letting etched on the bezel between the buttons. Hopefully you will easy find it. I can reference it if you send the model number to my email address or update your question.

Remove all the phones on the system. Remove all the handset batteries. Plug in one old style corded phone to the main phone jack, it is normally the one closest to the front door. Do you have dial tone? If not, it is your Telco. If you have a dial tone, plug all the other phones in testing for a dial tone as you go.
