My d610 shows "media test failure, check cable" -

That message usually appears when the hard drive has crashed or if you're lucky you've got a cdrom or dvd in the computer and the boot order is messed up. 9 out of 10 though it means the hard drive has crashed though :(

Do you have any important files on the hard drive?

Most modern motherboards have a "wake-up" option, i.e. wake-up, do a virus-scan, and then go back to sleep.

Restart your computer.
Enter BIOS SETUP

I have a refurbished Dell

Hi,

Welcome to Fixya. You can drain the power of the laptop by removing the battery then put it back in after 2 minutes. Just to check if it will be one. However if the problem is still there then this is not a quick fix the problem here is that the LCD or the Display is bad. If the refurbished laptop still have warranty on the store you purchase it you can ask them to replace it or replace the LCD if not then most likely you need to bring the machine to a local tech or center for repair.

Thanks for using Fixya.

When I start up my

Pressand hold the key while powering the system on. This will run theDell Diagnostics. Another more intense diagnostic program is located on a DellCD that you should have received with your laptop. Look for one that has "Diagnostics and utilities" listed underthe "Contents". You will have to boot from that CD disk. To do this, power onyour laptop and tap the key to bring you to the "One time bootmenu". Insert the CD and then select CD/DVD drive and hit key. Select the "Run the 32 Bit DellDiagnostics". If the laptop runs the diagnostics without errors then you have a software issue. If it is a hardware issue (i.e. memory, hard drive) diagnostics will indicate faulty component.

Check for a DC connector problem:

Symptoms of a broken power jack1. If you wiggle the power cord or the AC Adapter connector on the back of the laptop, the power LED and battery charge LED start to flicker.2. Battery will not charge in the laptop.3. Laptop runs fine off a charged battery.4. With the AC Adapter connected the laptop appears to be dead. No power LED or battery charge LED activity.5. If your laptop is out of warranty, then you can fix the problem by re-soldering DC-IN jack on the system board. If it I’m happy to assist further over the phone at https://www.6ya.com/expert/joe_8b8c2cd6ce148309
