I have a IBM think pad R51, I recently borrowed it out and it was returned with a dead battery. I plugged the battery chargeing adapter into the outlet and let charge for a day. When I turn on the laptop the screen is very dull, almost completely unreadable. The laptop appears to be functioning, but I cannot navigate because I cannot see the cursor. Is there a way for me to find out if the problem is the battery or the screen backlight?
i am having the same problem, my screen apears to be pretty nuch black until i have to tilt it up to be able to slightly read the dark screen.

at first i had one vertical, scrolling vertically, line on the screen now i have 4 scrolling and 1 solid vertical line. I have been told on the phone it could be something to do with the light array but i am still unsure of what i should do whether it is fixable or if i need a new screen or if i should just buy a new laptop. Some direction on this matter would be appreciated Thanks
Our service have 3 pcs of IBM r51 note. All of them has the same problem with the display (vertical lines). When I changed the LCD panel itself, I found that the source of the problem is the panel, not the video card, not the wireing... You only need to drop out the old LCD panel and get a new one. You cannot repair the wrong panel...

cannot log on because letters are unavailable
Solution#1: Accidentally pressing Sft+Numlock key combination will activate & inactivates ten key pad. (You'll see light enabled in padlock symbol with a number in it [i.e.beside ALL CAPS symbol on your lap monitor]).
Use: "ShiftKey+NumLock" (NumbLock Key: 2nd panel from Top right on keyboard)

How to disable the bootup password In R51 laptop?
You could open up the R51 and remove the CMOS battery. This would reset the password.
Here is a link I found that allows one to hack the BIOS password:
http://sodoityourself.com/hacking-ibm-thinkpad-bios-password/
Or try this fixya thread:
