I left home to meet a client for work and left my IBM T42 at home with my in-law...big mistake. I came home to find that somehow the letter "p" on my keyboard just up and jumped off. Nobody new about it and yet this thing is in 3 pieces and I need to figure out the right way to put it back together. The pieces are so small and fragile, I don't want to force anything. It looks like two mettal pieces have broken off where the seat of the button would be. What to do?
the problem IS self fixable. I just did it now to my "]" button on a gateway laptop containing 2 plastic peices underneath it. There are concepts that make a laptop keyboard work. Primarilly, a slightly bendable pair of plastic peices that are made to latch together at the middle to form an X shape, the bottom of the X containing two comparatively large slits where it seats at the base of the keyboard (tuck them in first so they both snap), and at the top of the X is 4 notches where they meet at the button's back surface to snap into. the X shape is arranged first so that you can manually lift and drop the X so it smoothly lifts and drops. After securing the primary mechanical system, you snap one side of the button to the X shape only. Then you use a very thin long peice of metal like the end of a sissor or small screwdriver to lift the middle of the bottom side of the button so the entire button is lifted to about the height it is supposed to be, then keep it there so the button doesnt move any lower when you try to snap the other side of the button firmly down. This is the hardest part of the repair since you cant really see what your doing, but as long as the button is lifted to its normal height, it should snap in and look as good as new.

My IBM T42 thinkpad would not start all of a sudden. The battery and AC power supply seem to be working fine. But everytime I start the laptop, there is a blank screen..the hard drive icon also does not blink.
However, if I persist and try starting it a a few dozen times, some time windows boots up and after a while everything freezes.
I was able to transfer all the data from hard drive through a SATA/USB interface. So, the hard drive is also good. The CD tray also works...so the laptop is getting power.
I suspect the problem is either to do with heat or some internal electrical connection. Would appreciate if someone could point me to some info on things I could try. Maybe a website that explains step-by-step or some general suggestions.
The laptop was working fine till 3 days back.
Thanks
Secondly,
I need you to try to power it on while you press down firmly (really
press down) in the area just towards the front of the space bar and
just to the left of the touch pad assembly. Hold it down while it tries
to go through the entire power up sequence.
happy! second worked... this actualy work for me it boot it windows normaly, it went to the logging proces as normal, it seems that some cable for the lcd has been lose i dont know can you explain Ron what causes this

looking for the wireless switch, helping a friend thats been tied to the land lines up to now.
Some IBM's don't have a wireless switch. If it's asking you to check to be sure that the wireless switch is on, or it won't let you enable the radio, try a different driver. Get the make and model of the wireless card and go to driverguide.com.

i can not fnd a switch for thewireless network for my ibm thinkpad t42
The T42 has a bulit-in wireless network adapter and a LAN network card. T42s most likely have an Intel wireless card or less likely a Cisco wireless card.
Your wireless network adapter may have been disabled in the BIOS
and/or
The drivers for the wireless network controller has not been installed.
To check the network adapter go to the Control Panel, Click on System, click on Hardware Tab then Device Manager. Then scroll down and click on Network adapters. If you don't see your network controller or you see a yellow ? against Other devices for the Network controller. Then either it has been disabled and/or the driver was not installed.
To get the driver for the network controller you need to dowload it from the IBM/Lenovo WEB site their support/download page from a computer that has Internet access. Make sure you select your laptop model and the driver for your Windows version.
Install the driver and you then need to configure the wireless adapter to suit your wireless router settings before you can access the Internet.

The wireless adapter keeps disconnecting. It is not the router because I have another laptop and its working fine.
Are you using IBM SW or Windows to manage the wireless? Occassionally, the IBM SW has issues with certain model routers and encyrption types.
You can also try unchecking the "Allow Computer to turn this device off to save power" in the adapter properties and
Adjusting the power on the wireless device to the max. By default IBM sets it in the middle to conserve power.

how do I find my button to turn on my wireless, or is it a function key
Fn or F2
There's no hardware switch to activate and deactivate the wireless networking, but pressing Fn and F5 brings up a menu that allows you to turn Bluetooth on/off, WiFi on/off or both. It seems like IBM isn't satisfied with standard toggle buttons like other notebook manufacturers - even pressing the Fn and F7 buttons to switch between internal and external screens, brings up a menu with multiple display settings and resolutions.
Hope this helps,
David

I am trying to figure out how to do a "field plus" function on the laptop keyboard.
Use the function Fn key and the + key (which is the colon semicolon key )

I have done all the normal stuff, device manager, add hardware, search the internet for drivers, nothing for the wireless card.... I have gone to IBMs page and nothing looking for the T42 2373 which I have... any where else to look for the drivers
Your problem could be :-
Downloaded the wrong driver
There are a number of different LAN devices & wireless cards etc used this model.
There are two stages in the installation process.
Go to the IBM/Lenovo WEB site - support/download page and download the latest Windows XP or Vista device drivers for your model laptop,
Use this link :-
http://www.ibm.com/products/finder/us/finders?pg=ddfinder&cm_re=other-_-suprcn-_-download
After you download the driver file, click on this file and it will unzip/expand the drivers and copies these files to the hard drive in c:drivers... take a note of the folder it has created to store the driver files and then go to this folder and run the SETUP file to install the driver.

My scroll key is locked on my IBM T43. How do i unlock it?i am not able to copy or apply formulaes on my Excel sheet. Pl Help
It's only in Excel you can't scroll? Can you scroll from side to side? If you have Excel 2003, try to press the "window" tab on the top and if the freeze pane is checked, uncheck it. Or if it says unfreeze pane, press that one. Hope this helps :)
