Did you reformat the hard drive? You may not have loaded the drivers for your network adapter. (In that case, your sound probably won't work either, and possibly other devices.)
If you check in the device manager (see here), you'll see it is disabled or not installed.
You need to locate your Drivers cd, or download them from Dell and install the drivers for your network adapter, reboot your system, and it should appear in the device manager and function. Here's a basic troubleshooter that will help you to sort this out, and here's a more advanced version in case you run into other problems. This excellent tutorial will help you to update the drivers for your system.

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.
If I've managed to answer your question or solve a problem, please take just a moment to rate this post....thanks!

Sometimes there are a few - usually from the month to month the machines were made the drivers can be different.
I have had to open the case and get the model number off the device before

That slot is actuall not accessable externaly. The open bay is for the AGP slot right next to it. Directly to the left of that slot you have a riser board the provides 2 additional horzontally mounted pci slots. You'll have to use one of these.

Questions about replacing ethernet card on my Dell desktop

Any ethernet card will work fine. Just be sure it's the fit's the correct slot. You probably have a "white" slot which is a pci slot. If it's a longer "black" slot then it's isa. More than likely it came from a pci slot. Before you buy one, confirm the type of slot. In additon, before installing it go to control panel and system settings, hardware, device manager and remove the old one by right clicking it and select delete or remove. Shut down the computer follow instructions for new card.
Probably will have to install the drivers first then shut down and install the new card. Good Luck.

Nic card issues?

Do you have any 2.4MHz cordless phones in the house or is the computer near a microwave? those two items can cause interference. You can go to Dell.com, go to support then download drivers/software, enter in your service tag is best if you know it? find the network card driver and download it. You can find out which NIC card you have by going to my computer, system, then device manager and right click on the NIC, then properties, it will tell you what card you have.
