you have to backup the mbr before edit. also try use command Fdisk /mbr command to repair mbr. also pls try to use bootable recovery disk like hiran boot disk, you can use hbcd menu and disk tools and choose disk genius or data recovery

any external hard drive will work just conect it via usb.

It is because the old USB plugs were version 1.0 and the new ones are version 2.0.
