Turns on for a couple seconds and then it says power off and shuts down, what could be doing this?

Try disconnecting each speaker one at a time and see if the amp turns on normally. If it does then you should replace the last speaker wires you pulled. Beyond that, the amp could be bad.

Front panel switches not working, works fine with remote control

Not good. At least the remote is working fine. With high cost of labor and parts you might just be better off dealing with it or replacing unit.

My friend kept turning it up and i kept turning it back down then it just said poweroff

Sounds like your "friend" has cooked something. It could be one of your speakers (do they all sound ok for the 5 seconds it runs?), or it could be the receiver.... I would try disconnecting all the speakers and see if it stays on. If so, it may be one of the speakers. Connect them one at a time, and see if you can tell.

How to adjust front speaker level on vsx-d308 pioneer surround sound ?

Did you use to be able to turn up the front levels and now you can't? Or is it the first time you have installed it? If it previously did then clearly there is a fault. However if not. Then like many receivers the front volume is simply controlled by the main volume control. If this is the case then you need to adjust the other channels to give you the best sound. The best way to do this is get one of those THX DVD discs. On the menu to the disc you will find a setting for setting up the sound THX screen. It will produce a test tone for each speaker. You then adjust it for the best sound quality. This way the sound field will sound great for your living room and Dolby movies will have you jumping out of your seat when an unexpected sound appears on the left channel and voices won't get drowned out by noises from the back.

Only 3 of 5 speakers work

did you make sure the power was off to the receiver. if you did not switch off you blew up those two channels for your speakers. you need to make sure you power down before any connections are made. you need to take it in for repairs

I have a Pioneer VSX-D308

What your unidentified TV >>requires<< is the BEST Video from every video source. That would be the DVD, SAT Box. It probably has multiple high-end video inputs, right?

What your receiver needs is at least a basic composite video connection to the TV so you can set it up and manage it.

A web search for "Pioneer VSX-D308 manual" will find the manual.

ALL of the BEST Audio should go directly to the Pioneer. That includes the SAT and DVD player.

Your TV can exist just fine with basic audio from the video sources. And you could still watch it/them without the Pioneer turned of if you want.

I can't find the exact manual for free anywhere but if you download something similar like http://www.retrevo.com/support/Pioneer-VSX-D409-Receivers-manual/id/385ci977/t/2/ it should give you the basic guidance you need.

I recommend

Do some web searching for what the cables are for. It's all basic and standard.

I have a pioneer vsx-d308,

But have you tried it NAKED?

Generally speaking, an amp attempts to protect itself from heat, shorts, overloads and operator exuberance by refusing to turn on or stay on.

Overloads can be from excessive periods of high output or marginally low impedance loading by the speakers; and shorts would be wiring issues or a speaker blowing up.

You should be able to feel if it's hot. WHY is it overheating? Make sure it has sufficient ventilation on all sides and that vent holes are not blocked by dust balls. Ensure the fan (if equipped) is running as designed (some only operate on demand). Clean dust and debris from it.

If the amp comes back on after cooling, you're lucky. They only have so many self-protection cycles in their lives so continuously resetting or cycling their power without addressing the cause can do more harm than good.

If it protects immediately on a cool power up you should disconnect the speaker connections and try it 'naked'. If it comes up then diagnose which lead(s) are shorted. If it does not come up the problem is internal and should be left to an experienced and competent hands-on tech.

Check for loose speaker connections at the speaker as a possible root cause for intermittent shutdown.

I have a Pioneer VSX-D308

I only know of one way to do this and here it is:

1. Plug your tape deck's output (cassette or R2R) into the EQ's "Line In".
2. Plug the EQ's "Line Out" into the Receiver's "Tape 1 Input".
3. Now plug the Receivers "Tape 1 Output" into the Tape Player's "Line In".
4. You have now made an "FX loop" for the Tape Deck. Now you just have to put the Tape Deck on "Tape Monitor".....put the Receiver on "FM"..... and turn on your favorite FM station and you will hear the FM Receiver THROUGH the tape deck's "Monitor Send" AND the EQ.............set EQ to taste....... and BINGO.......DONE!

Enjoy,

The left channel on our Pioneer VSX-D409 is weak. Some sound is coming through, but very little. We have double checked the wire and the connection in back. Everything there is kosher. Any ideas?

Check the balance control. Apart from that the unit will have to be checked internally to ascertain where the signal is breaking down. This will require some skill and some equipment. My guess is it will be a dry solder joint or a dried out capacitor. If a capacitor looks 'leaky' or swollen, it is a good bet it is outside its tolerance and should be replaced. Sorry couldn't be any better help. Good luck.
