Mitsubishi WS 65857 Picture problem.

Mitsubishi's have been known to "burn in" when you have a stationary image on the screen for too long. Usually its not a problem but in some cases I've seen..if its hours and hours of game play..or even places like home shopping network that have phone numbers that never move during the broadcast...it can cause the image to burn the screen.

The projection tubes would not be burned...it would be the mirror viewing screen.

Mitsubishi WS-65857 has a trouble code 22 which I

2, then 2 blinks is short protection.

Usually this means in this set one of the two pico fuses that protect the convergence circuit is blown.

This model uses two of the STK-392-570 CONVERGENCE IC'S.

What you need to do first if you are able is remove the back cover and locate the fuses---I can tell you where they are on the board. Check both of them just like you would check any fuse. If either or both are blown----you have found your problem. The set will detect if either or both are bad that no voltage is reaching the Convergence circuit and it will shut off.

I can tell you the least expensive place to get the parts and I have step by step start to finish instructions for this repair if you are handy and know how to solder etc.

Considering the total parts cost would be under 25 dollars--if you can do this repair you can save a lot of money--most shops get 300-400 for this kind of repair----I know as I have done hundreds of these repairs----did a Mitsubishi a few days ago with the same two chips bad---about one hour for me in the customer's home.

I have photos of the fuses and location also--if you decide you want the instructions and photos we will find a way to get them to you. I am not permitted to give MY email address here--if you know what I mean.

If you have ANY QUESTIONS OR WANT the instructions etc---let me know--I am here to help and I do know a lot about this type of set.

First thing is for you to find out if either of the fuses is gone----if they are----you MUST change both chips and or fuses etc.

double check the wire connections especially the connectors between the circuit boards. They can sometimes not be seated fully and that can happen. I would also trace back the speaker wire plug to insure its plugged in correctly and at the correct location.

Tv will not come on after power outage

Most likely a power spike occurred and if you are lucky it blew a fuse inside of the TV. You will have to dismantle the back of the unit and look for the fuse on the circuit board. It will be most likely a ACG type fuse. You can get replacements at your nearest Radio Shack.

Mitsubishi ws- 65857 keeps shutting

Error 22 means short protect circuit failure. Source of the fault is the power supply board. Since the set is rather old component level repair is the oly option as the replacement boards will be impossible to find. I have the schematics and will help you fix it provided
1)You have a multimeter and know how to use it
2)You know how to solder.
Please let me know if you wish to do it yourself.

Your convergence has failed and need to be repaired. Once quick test is to goto your convergence menu and see if you can adjust red and blue. If not its has failed and needs to be fixed.

The picture episodically gets red/green shadows

Sounds like a convergence problem.

These sets are prone to having this problem when first turned on or after a short warmup.

IN every case it means the convergence out chip or chips need to be replaced--I have seen dozens of Mitsubishi sets with this problem.

Confirm actual model number--I have step by step instructions for this repair and parts cost will be under 30 dollars.

see attached photo which is typical of convergence problem.

My tv turns on and then turns off about 3 seconds

The model you have selected should have a self check feature: when turns off and the green power light goes off:

ON THE FRONT OF THE SET PRESS AND HOLD BOTH MENU AND INPUT together for at least 5 seconds and then release both buttons.

The power light should blink a two digit error code: for example: 2 blinks, a pause and 2 blinks--it will repeat the code about 10 times.

error codes for this set:

1, then 2 no error detected
2, then 1 X-ray protection
2, then 2 short protection
2, then 3 deflection circuit problem
2, then 4 vertical deflection problem

2, then 2 is the most common and easiest to fix.

Let me know what you find and if 2,2 I have detailed instructions for repairing that kind of trouble.

I am here to help people.

I just got this tv

Hi Itsleenda.

There is not much that you can do at component level. You described a defective TV. Either one of the three CRTs (light tubes) is gone, or the digital controller board is gone. PSU must also be tested.

The technician will test starting from the power supply (PSU). If TV starts up, then testing is reading voltages in the different DDC line.

Second part to test are the CRTs, deflection yokes, and the CRT power boards.

Finally, the tech will test video circuits, main board, terminal board, convergence and jungle. Things to test are mainly grouped in the assembly below, click on picture to enlarge:

Ours started showing a concave or a bowing in type

If you try to adjust convergence with the flash focus, perfect focus, (depending on the make of your set) or by manual convergence and the lines will not line up or even move. Your symptom sounds like a damaged convergence IC.

If you want to repair this set yourself, I have some instructions below that will be a help to you.
While it is not a very hard repair, this repair can be a bit tricky. If you have a 45W soldering iron, solder, solder wick, heat sink compound, and some basic soldering skills, you can repair the television yourself.
*** VERY IMPORTANT NOTE***

If your set is not producing a clear picture and the colors are not lining up, do not continue to watch the set as this can lead to further failure and possibly damage the individual CRT's in the set.

I have repaired hundreds of these sets, so if you have any questions after reading the following, please reply to this post and I will help you in any way that I can.

With that aside I have some support suggestions that I have put together that may help you make an informed decision. You should be able to get a local service center to repair this at your house for between $350.00 - $450.00, If you want to repair this set yourself, I have some instructions below that will be a help to you. While it is not a very hard repair, this repair can be a bit tricky How do I tell if the IC's are damaged? Since you cannot look inside of an IC, you will have to locate some of the components in the area around the convergence IC's. You may be able to see some resistors that have changed colors or you test a resistor and it no longer reads the value marked by the color bands or the printed value. You will have to replace the IC's and the supporting components. When you remove the old IC's, please be sure to remove all of the old heat sink compound, as it can act as an insulator for the new IC's and cause them to overheat. I usually clean the heat sinks with alcohol and a small rag. Where are the IC's located and how do I find them? There are two and large IC's that control the convergence in a big screen set. Some of the newer sets only have one. If you only have one, it is right in the middle of the set on the center circuit board. They are secured to a very large aluminum heat sink. They will have a part number stamped on them that will start with an STKXXX-XXX, like STK392-110.Along with the convergence IC's there will also be some associated components that will need to be replaced as well. There are some resistors that are part of the convergence circuit that will be open and need to be replaced. Most likely these will appear charred in the center. If you have an Ohm Meter or a DVM, check all the resistors that are close to the IC's and you should be looking for either ones that have opened or have changed values. If one of the convergence IC's are found to be bad, I would replace them both, if one has gone bad the other may go soon. I usually order my parts from Andrews Electronics in California, they will have the OEM components that you will need.Their site is http://www.andrewselectronics.com/welcome.aspxAnd their phone number is a 24-Hour Order Desk: (800) 274-4666I recommend the phone order so you can talk to the person about the different types of IC's that are available.I would also advise that the convergence IC's be OEM or better, just because they are cheap does not mean that they are a good deal. I have seen the cheap IC's fail after a short time, even though they look exactly like the OEM IC's. I think that the bottom line is that you will get what you pay for when it comes to the parts. You can also try http://www.tvrepairkits.com/ , they do carry OEM or better parts. When you order from them you will get a kit with instructions on how to do the repair, step-by-step. I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance please comment to this post and I will try to help you further.

I have a Mitsubishi WS-65857

Hi - Welcome to FixYa.

As you've already bought the parts, I will try to assist you, but this is really a job for a professional service engineer. If I wrote instructions on how to do this, I would be liable for any damage or injury caused when you attempted self-repair. You could still get a severe electric shock from inside your TV after it has been disconnected from the power.

In addition, Step-by-step instructions would take several pages as this needs to include:

1. Disassembly of the case
2. Location of the components
3. Replacement of the components.
4. Convergence adjustment following IC replacement.

This constitutes a massive amount of information and is too long to post here.

In view of the above, I can provide a link where you can download the full service manual. All of the information you require is contained within. I suggest you download it, read it thoroughly and if, after doing so, you aren't confident of being able to complete the repair yourself, please get a professional service engineer to do it for you. The service manual can be downloaded from here:

http://rapidshare.com/files/433490879/WS-65857.pdf

The download page will open in a new browser window. To download the file, you need to scroll to the bottom right-hand corner of the page and click on "Slow Download". You will need to wait up to 30 seconds before downloaded, as indicated by the timer. When the timer reaches zero, click on "Download now!". SAVE the file (WS-65857.pdf) to an easy to remember location on your PC and when the download is complete, go to that location on your PC and double-click the file to open it. If you are unable to open the file, you will also need to download the latest version of Adobe Reader:

http://get.adobe.com/reader/

You are welcome to reject my solution and seek help from other experts, but I suggest downloading and reading the service manual first as you will then understand the complexity of the task.

Location of the convergence ICs can be found on page 18 - marked on the diagram as "IC8C01&IC8C02 CONV. OUTPUTS"

Regards,
BElectric
