My jenome gem has suddenly

Check for a local sewing machine repair shop. Some shops will give you a free or low cost estimate for repair. It sounds like something is binding (growling sound) and you need to have a repair person look at it before it becomes an expensive problem. Better to be safe than sorry.

I need tobuy a sewing machine that I can leave over the winter in an unheated cabin we use only from June to October. The temperatures are below freezing for most of the winter.

Check into a more mechanical machine. Pfaff makes several really nice mechanical models. They feature lots of stitch types and capabilities. They will have push buttons without LCD screens and setting lights. They are well built will sew through several layers of jean material or a few layers of auto seat belt are not an issue.

Needle not picking up bottom thread

Remove the needle plate and the bobbin case.

Ensure that the needle is inserted all the way up into the needle clamp.

Set the machine for straight stitch, center needle position.

Slowly turn the handwheel in the normal sewing direction and observe the following hook timing setting:

When the needle reaches it's lowest point and travels up 3.5mm, the point of the hook should be directly behind the needle, or at least within 1 or 2mm.

Another view is as the hook passes the needle, it should pass the needle slightly above the eye of the needle.

If the timing looks good, use some alcohol on a bit of cloth to clean the hook, careful around the tip of the hook as it is very sharp.

If the hook timing is off, you will need to take it to a knowledgeable service person as there are several possible solutions and several other related adjustments which will need to be made.

Oiling my Janome Gem Gold

Janome Gem are self lubricating. Silicon is embedded in the gears and releases as it runs. If the machine is put away and not run every so often it will lock up. The hand wheel may have thread caught up around it. The Gems aren't assembled to be dissembled except to change the light bulb.

Threading & Use of Needle Threder

Threading as per image....make sure presser foot is up so top thread will properly engage in tension unit, make sure your thread is inserted in small guide on needle arm too. Your user guide should have a clear graphic of this process which is essentially the same for all machines.
2bc0705.jpg
As for the needle threader, once thru the last guide on the needle arm, raise needle to highest position, lower the needle threader so that the tiny hook engages the eye of the needle and place thread horizontally from L to R along the plastic arm so the tiny hook can grab thread, release threader and a small loop will form in needle, pull it clear and you are away !

If the tiny hook has been bent, a little judicious and gentle bending to re-align may be necessary, use a jewellers screwdriver or similar and please be very gentle
