It should have a gear under the side cover that goes from the crank to line drum to the pawl. You should take the side cover off open face reel Periodicly to lube the gears. It may be so a locking pin in the interior gear.

put line through ur spreader on the multi[plier then tie a loop not cut off the little bit after tying knot then wind up slowly till it starts to get tight then speed up ur process till u are happy with the amount on ur reel
