this old PC has CCFL lamps and most are dead now, for just that reason. 2008 PC>? 2 year before first PC had LED back lamps. not photo of your screen messing up, so no ACCURATE ANSWERS possible. this line is it 1 pixel tall? or huge line, huge is dead CCFL tube. line 1 pixel or so is bad LCD. there you go me pretending to see your screen. this PC is trash, it is not worth fixing for sure. try the VGA jack on the rear to a real modern 2010 or newer monitor if that works use that. till the hDD dies. next.

Probably you will need to replace the powerplug from the mother board. Usually this happens to this brand. Check it up and I hope you can fix it.

Your graphics card is toast. I'm having the same problem. What I want to know is if the card is replacable without replacing the entire motherboard... :(

You need to see if your laptop lcd screen is faulty and/or the lcd inverer is faulty.
1....Test the lcd screen:
Hook your laptop to an outside monitor and then start your laptop normally...if the picture on the external monitor is good, then your lcd screen is bad.
2....Backlight Faulty: If the monitor is still as dark like your lcd screen on the laptop then it could be the backlight that is faulty.

Use http://unlockbiosrecovery.com/Gateway_Bios_Pass.php to get the bios master password for your Gateway Notebook. They only charge $20 and guarantee it to work or they refund your money. They do most laptops bios and hard drive master passwords. As a laptop repair tech I use them often and they are great.

Check to make sure the cpu is running properly, if it is then chances are the heat sink that covers the cpu processor is dirty along with the fins. The heat sink should be removed, and clean out the old conductive thermal grease and new applied.

Best I can tell the GeForce 8800M is the only high end graphics option for that system

Hi, I'm assuming that you're running vista. It's not a heating issue, otherwise the machine would shut down dead in an instant. It could be a duff ram chip, which would give the problems you are seeing. Simply burn off a Ubuntu disk, and test your Ram. If it's not that, its a software issue, and may well be Windows Ram management playing up. This is a common problem in all windows OS's. Boot up off the windows disk (if you have it) and click the 'Repair' option. Alternatively if you have an onboard restore partition, you can click F8 on booting, and 'Repair this computer'.

It sounds like one of a few problems

1) Ensure that when you put your laptop down the air vent (the place where the hot air comes out from the laptop is not blocked),

2) If the above does not cure the issue then it would seem the heat sink itself is faulty and wil need to be replaced

I would recommend that you book it into a reputable PC repair shop if number 1 fails

You have to find out what motherboard you have and look up the specs on the motherboard

You may need to reinstall a driver for it, search on the providers website, maybe they have some tips on what to reinstal.

Or

Try to uninstall and reinstall the webcam

When this starts to happen it means the back light is on its way out and needs to be replaced.
