I would contact sec of state and supply them with both #'s and try to find issue, maybe ther was a mistake made during last title or registrtion transfer. hope you kept sales reciept for proof of your purchase.

check the width of the chassis rails for starters . If the same width then check the cab mount distances . With 9 years between chassis I would think that the chassis will be different
Scrapyard i would imagine but its not old that a new one from a ford dealer wouldnt be available ,so instead of browsing the internet walk to the dealer with the chassis number and iam sure they will oblige ,Scrapped one of these last year owing to problem with a corroded chassis number ,imported UK reg vehicle and put on spanish plates but teh chassis number on the floor had the last number corroded away so it failed the inspection .The effort of getting it re stamped was more than the car was worth as it was a rust box with duff canvas roof
you may find its a chinas copy of a honda 125cc so wip off the sprokets and just walk into the bike shop with them and just say "match them up mate!" dont go telling him what there off of as they just shake there heads and say iv got nothing like that? most of them are sale's shop morons? but as they say,,, monkey see's monkey go's and get's!!!! a banana as a treet helps there as well! also my bike is a copy as well and iv just changed me sprokest i droped the rear sproket teeth down by 5 teeth,,,yes thats right i did say by 5 teeth,smaller!!! it like moving first gear up into second gears place and adding a sixth gear, and i get another 10mph on top end, now i can get right across the road with out changing gear first! but it wont carry a passenger to well
quite a few people have this problem ,it would appear that the problem lies in the connection plug where the lights wiring connects to the chassis loom.normally a quick clean and grease of the connections works wonders
You have to contact the Smart dealer in your area , so that they can rectify the problem , as Chassis number is saved into the ECU too and can be extracted from the car ECU it self to show the original chassis number, assuming it has the original ECU in it.
Or you can check with any shop that aervice Smart for the same.
By the way before you do that, which VIN does not match , the sticker in the back or the engraved one in the front??
what is the spec? best to ring ford and they will tell you. just give them the registration/ chassis id. you can find the chassis id on the bottom of the front windowscreen on the passenger side, or a little flap on the right side of the drivers door.
