2003 Ultra Classic shuts down

My bike loses all electrical power when riding in the city after it gets hot. Three dealers have performed numerous fixes to no avail. The engine is not overheating.

No lights or anything, hav to reset the clock even after power comes back on. I have learned from others it is likely the circuit breaker tripping after it gets hot. This makes sense. HD needs to come up with a fix. After 2004 they started using fuses instead of a breaker. They had a recall on 2003's that had a 40 amp and replaced it with a 50 amp. They have replaced 4 of my circuit breakers. The wierd thing is my bike has over 66,000 miles on it and never had this problem except for the last year. I have had a couple of ignitin switches replaced also.

This problem has affected may of us. The problem could be the ignition switch. I have changed 3 on my bike and have had 2 other friends that have 2004 FLHTCU And 2004 FLTC that have had to do the same. Ae there any other symtoms? Do your Lights stay on or quit what esle is affected?

Could be the regulator/rectifier unit at the front of the engine. I replaced one recently with a new ,non genuine Harley part and that was faulty too. When I replaced that the problem was fixed. Don't waste your money on cheap parts.

Thermal safety cutout is shutting down ignition, if you don't feel the engine is that hot replace thermal cutout and relay

As i'm riding the engine will shut off sometimes and I have to restart at the start button. Any Ideas?

I also have a 2003 Ultra that would shut down for no reason while I was driving, started happening 3 months after I had the bike, very dangeous, happened in a curve once, took it to the dealer and they were having problems a module for the ignition I thought. They replaced it twice, then told me that because I had a trailer wiring harness hooked up that was causing interferance, they took that off and havent had the problem since. Didnt use the trailer hitch much anyways, but dont know at this point if it was the module or the harness. Hope this helps.

Had a simuliar problem, Bike would have a total shutdown a High Temps/Low Speeds/High RPMs. Everything would reset itself after appox 2 minutes. Everything would shutdown Electric and engine.
2 Harley dealers spent 75 hours diagnosing it, dealer could not reproduce it. Last repair was to replace battery cables. Seems to have fixed it. Have ridden 15oo miles since repair. Problem reacurred once last time I rode. Again complete shutdown bike restored after 2 minutes. Did not happen again the rest of the day over 200 miles

I had a problem like that on my 2003 ultra classic. turns out there was a recall on some electric block in the fairing. It was a main connection power block kinda thing. Anyway they replaced it and then it never happened again.

it would ride a while on a hot day 25 min freeway and then just shut down. wait and cool down and it would restart.

I hope this helps.

With out warning all power to bike shuts down /

i think you have a battery fault inside the battery there are lots of plates all joined up if there is a broken joint on the battery turminal post inside your bikes battery all the power just disappears just like that,,,but a slight bump may remake the joint and all is powerd back on again,,,if you could get hold of another battery just to try it out??? or take out your battery and hook up a lamp to it then give the battery posts a wiggel and the battery a thumping if the lamp gos out you just found the problem

2003 Ultra shuts off while riding

how many lights are you running? try disconnecting the battery and hooking up a shunt with a volt meter or a current meter inline. then check the current with different accessories or everything running. If you have a big load and stereo amp you may need to upgrade the charging system and the Circuit Breaker or try a aftermarket CB.
It happened once to me, riding slow, new pavement, very hot day, spot lights and stereo amp on.
Have a new CB on order but, put on another 4000 miles without another problem????

TOTAL SHUT DOWN

This has to be a blown fuse. If it happened slowley you lost your altenator or battery connection.
