Marked on the oil level glass window way down low on the RH Side, there are two lines. When the bike is in up right position, the oil level should be at the top line marking. and BTW, you can use 20w50 if you live in hot HOT climate or heavy Heavy traffic areas or if you ride long hauls at a time. Anyways, Whatever you do, Do NOT use synthetic oil. it's a waste of money and it robs you of torque and horsepower when needed in high gear and overdrive at higher passing speeds when you need it the most. I have owned 4 Royal stars 2ventures and 2deluxes. and crossed our continent twice on Royal stars. they gave me amsoil 20w50 in St Louis MI, Bad Idea. I knew there was something wrong the minute I went over 90 to pass a truck . and it kept doing it every time at high speed and under demand in overdrive...it took me 6 oil changes to get rid of that. I wish I never used Synthetic oil. yamaha oil or even Walmart castrol Grand Prix motorcycle oil 20w50 has been working great for me for over 8 years now since I switched from yamaha oil to castrol.
There is a round sight glass on the right side of the motor down low, near the front - you'll probably have to get on your hands and knees to see it. The bike must be held up vertically (not on the side stand) so you'll need someone to hold the bike up. It should also be level front to back and the oil level should be at about the halfway point between the top and bottom of the glass. Oil type recommended by Yamaha is SAE20W40. The site www.venturerider.org is a good resource for information on the Royal Star bikes. Be sure not to use automobile oil as most of those have "energy conserving" additives that will quickly ruin your clutch!! Stay with motorcycle specific oils to be on the safe side.
